Agreed. Looking back at one of my old Import Tuner magazines, they took a 1G GS-T and gained 106.7whp and 79.9tq with only 3 mods (290whp/278tq after mods). The mods consisted of an Apexi dp, HKS fuel cut defencer and a Holley fuel pump totaling a whopping $602.

Haha I never said my car was the fastest or best thing on the road. Only better than most of those rice rockets we see at Wendys. I also never said Civics couldn't be fast cars. They're light, and have strong engines. You can't even compare it to a Volvo, it's not even aimed at the same market. People who bought those cars were looking for a disposable car that had good gas efficiency, and not so good safety ratings. A couple of years later, those people realized what a mistake they made, and sold them used (usually to Ricers) who realized how much potential they have under the hood, and NOWHERE else.

tl;dr

It's easy to make a shitty car fast. It's a lot harder to make a nice car FASTER.

No increase in boost pressure? No other mods to the intake or exhaust except a downpipe, necked back down again and then mated to the stock exhaust?

C'mon...I think you missed Part 1 of that build.

The fuel pump and HKS FCD are there because the car is running significantly more boost than stock, and needs more fuel flow. There's clearly more done to make 106whp than a *downpipe* as the only power modification.

Squeezing more fuel into a stock-boost 4G63 isn't going to make 106whp.

During the dyno run the boost passed the stock setting and hit a peak of 17psi before hitting the factory fuel cut...

I don't know if this is actually a con but the A'PEXi downpipe removes the factory catalytic...

Conclusion: A two-hour-and-15-minute install netted a total of 106.7 horsepower and 79.8 lb-ft of torque. We only did six small modifications and are still on the stock turbo and that has me curious as to how far we can take the car in street trim...

I thought raising the boost would be rather obvious, but I was listing what was mentioned in the article. All that data you see there was not mentioned, but yes that is the same car.

Kinda makes me want one to see what I could get out of it, but then, I'd be about 18 years behind the trend. LOL! Better late than never?!

They can be stupid fast for little investment but they have downfalls.....

6-bolts not so much, 7-bolt yes. 1st gens are strong like bull

Without looking at that thread, anything more than 16lbs on stock turbo requires fuel pump, and bigger injectors, but with the right mods and tuning can go well into the 11's on the stock 14b, or T25 depending on whether your talking about 1st gen or 2nd gen

Not so much to do with the turbos themselves (they either last or they don't last) in terms of power... Just extrapolate how much they're likely spending in other critical areas when they spend $160 shipped for their turbo. Turbo itself isn't limiting the power output ;)
