B Mac Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 The audi guys do what are called "FATS"...The fats time is how long it takes to get from 4500-6500rpm in 3rd gear. Why can't we do something like this? It's a pretty accurate way to tell if modifications yield power gains and it's also a good way to just compare two or more cars. We just need to make our own acronym that doesn't stand for "for the advancement of the S4" lol...."FAVS" maybe? "for the advancement of VolvoSpeed"??? 3000rpm-6000rpm sound good?
S8ET6 Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 how do they account for the difference in gearing between an auto and a manual? I'm pretty sure that 3rd gear is 1:1 ration in all 4 speed autos...
TRACStar Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 Not sure what rpm would be in third but the auto will downshift to second under 70mph. I can check tomorrow, sounds like a fun idea though. But I think 6K in 3rd with an auto is close to 130 if I remember correctly :D
JVC Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 My car will ride 3rd gear to just under 130mph... sooo maybe 2nd gear instead?
JCviggen Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 You'll all lose to my 4.45 final M56
Mesoam Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 good to know the Audi people are just as cheap and won't throw down some $ for a few dyno pulls
greekone Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 Sounds pretty cool to me, I won't be faster than many at all though. lol
magicaljake Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 i know a big thing for DSMers is 70-90 times (getting into it at 60 or so, so your already into full boost) we would need a sure way for us to time it......FACK we need a good data logging system
Fudge_Brownie Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 I'm not really convinced this can be accurately timed without pulling values via OBD to some sort of logger.

Yeah...well, to be fair, in additions to monitoring via OBD, we'd need to standardize as many variables as possible - which means using the same driver in all cars. So, I'm manning up, taking one for the team, and volunteering to come beat on each of your cars in an effort to get the best times from it. (it's a dirty job, but someone has to do it) I'll just need each of you to cover airfare and hotel accomodations - oh, and sign a waiver releasing me from liability too.

Don't front..... we know you just are getting tired of the S80  j/k Its cool though my 850 may be faster but will never be as comfortable i know a big thing for DSMers is 70-90 times (getting into it at 60 or so, so your already into full boost) Cheating..... sound about right for DSMers though :P
B Mac Posted March 22, 2010 Author Report Posted March 22, 2010 Good points with the automatic trans issues...how about 55-100mph?...I know that I'm one of the special ones who can do it in one gear lol You'll all lose to my 4.45 final M56 ....has nothing to do with the fact that you have eleventy-billion more horsepower than anybody else on the board though, that's for sure lol

I've been doing this for a while, and people make fun of it. lol. Though I usually do 50-70 or 70-90. But it's the same idea (in gear accel). I'd say 4k to 6k would be ideal, and allow both auto and manual guys to compete. You don't need to compensate for the difference in gearing - the results show what kind of an impact those variables have on performance.

If you get this 5 Hz GPS receiver for about 65$ http://cgi.ebay.com/Qstarz-BT-Q818X-Bluetooth-GPS-receiver-MTK2_W0QQitemZ260566723400QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGPS_Devices?hash=item3caafcab48 And download racechrono for free for either your smartphone or laptop... http://www.racechrono.com/ and you can customize any speed bracket you want measured. You'd be in business for a whole lot less :)
