PyROTech
you get your yearly free from the big guys. You can sign up for credit reporting services, from transunion equifax. i think i pay 45 bucks a year for monitoring that tells me everytime there is a change on the report and emails me. I know it works b/c when i changed account numbers on one of my cc it emailed me.
Fudge_Brownie
You can get your credit report yearly for free, however that does not include your credit score, which is what I believe Carson wants. You have to pay to get the score. For those unsure of the difference, the credit report shows all the lines of credit in your name, payment history, debts, etc. The score is a number they come up with using a random number generator to decide how worthy you are of taking on more debt. Burn-E
The only authorized source for the free reports from the three credit bureaus on an annual basis is: annualcreditreport.com which gives you access to your reports without requiring membership fees or trial memberships. That said, myfico is a good resource but you can always get the FICO scores through the trial membership also which you can turn around and cancel before 30 days is up. Some people pull one of the three free reports every 4 months or so in order to track their credit over the year - others like me, prefer to check it annually and compare information across all three. Personally I don't see the value of paying some site to track my credit if I can do it on an annual basis. But there's an awful lot of hype about the unknowns that credit insurance and credit scoring companies try to take advantage of. If you know what your score is now and you're not adding a half dozen credit cards or additional debts then your likelihood of seeing that score drop is almost totally controlled by you. I know the credit card issuers have a vested interest in insuring that fraud doesn't occur on my accounts since I've had them cancel my cards twice in the last 5 years due to fraud. I also use virtual credit cards for many of my online purchases when I think there might be a concern - something Visa offers. And the odds of someone stealing your identity based on the reported cases to the FTC last year was 1:1104. That's 278,078 out of a population of 307 million in 2009. That means you have a .09% probability of experiencing identity theft each year and the actual complaints are down 4% vs last year. If you take the necessary steps to protect your identity (shredding documents, being vigilant about your credit card bills, being careful about what information you make available, keeping an eye on your volume of mail, ensuring your computer is locked down against the internet to avoid getting hacked) then there's a fairly low risk of getting into trouble. For reference, 1:1104 is about the same odds you will wind up going to the ER due to an accident involving a desk, shelf, cabinet or rack. Unless you're visiting unsavory sites or something like that?

Serge
www.CreditKarma.com Free. And I mean, 100% free. No service agreements, no need to cancel. I check it once every two months or so, which is nice because it graphs all your scores.
