Swapped in a spare fan clutch a buddy had, no dice... Napa Auto happened to have one for an early 240(75-78) so I bought that and hopefully it'll work. If it doesn't, I'll be pulling the electric fan out of the camry and wiring it up for the weekend.

Wrong fan... Pulling the fan out of the camry and wiring it in, I'm done with messing with this shit. Radiator sprung a leak too. Exciting. This car is pissing me off already.

Time for some:

Nice project!

How is the rust on the front frame rail/firewall junction? That's what finally killed my pumpkin '74 :( - they both tore away when I was hit from behind by an idiot who said he didn't notice I was stopped to make a left turn.

BTW - I still had this car when my daughter was born in '86 :)

The underbody rust is very minimal. No rust that I can see anywhere near the firewall. Only major rust is behind the driveside front seat, and on the wheel arch (driver side) from a bad repair. I've a bunch of companies supplying replacement body parts for the 140 series now, so that's really good news. I already received the both lower arch panels and need the upper now to replace it, as well the floor boards. Any other rust is merely surface rust. I plan on painting next summer.

First, I just wanted to give a great big huge thanks to MikeP. I couldn't have made it home w/o your help and really appreciate you taking time out of your day to help me out. A million thank you's to you.

So, a quick update on the car. I swapped the bw35 in last weekend and drove the car to work last tuesday. Trans worked great, shifted smoothly and cleanly. The clutch fan seemed to be bad, temp would climb at stop lights. So I picked up a used from a local t-bricker and swapped that in at his place. Car still ran hot at stop lights. So, I bought another fan clutch from Napa Auto, but it came in as the wrong part and I was stuck with it. IT was a late model b21 fan clutch and doesn't fit the water pump pulley with out some modification, so I made a spacer and bolted it up. Again, car ran hot. So, must be a circulation issue. Stopped before I got on the bay bridge and pulled the thermostat out. Got the car into Easton, MD Thursday night at about midnight and the fuel filter started to clog up. Spent the rest of the drive sputtering at 50-60 miles. Stopped 10 miles outside of OC for my wife to use the bathroom and the car seemed to overheat as I turned the car off. After thinking about it for a weekend, I don't think it did, not having the t-stat in the housing allowed for a poor seal on the housing to the head, and the top of the head was covered in coolant. So I suspect that is what made it appear as though it overheated, overheated meaning steam poured out from under the hood when I parked. We stopped for about 35 minutes and then hit the road again. Made it to destination, unloaded the car, then went to move it and it wouldn't start. Pushed the car to another spot left it for the next day. Was able to get it started Friday and moved it later that night to a better spot. Monday I went out and found a fuel filter for the car and swapped that in. Car ran great. I remembered that night that I forgot to reinstall the t-stat. So this morning, in the rain, I went to swap the t-stat back in. In the process of tightening the bolts to the housing, I didn't realize the t-stat wasn't seated properly in the housing and the housing cracked. The housing didn't just slightly crack, it cracked in about 4-5 directions, which effectively rendered the car undriveable.

My buddies from New Hampshire had a truck and tow dolly, so after unsucksessfully finding a truck and tow dolly, they offered to tow it out to Mike Perry's shop 60 miles west. I can't say enough thank yous to so many people, a lot of people went out of their way to lend me a hand this weekend, and I am forever grateful! Fast forward a bit... Mike's buddy was able to weld the housing up for me, and we just had to clean it up and make the t-stat fit again. Did that, reinstalled it, and it worked great. Never leaked or gave up the goose. Krista and I loaded the car back up and we hit the road. Got to the bay bridge and the car started to sputter again. Got to route 2 and the sputter got very bad. Decided to take route 2 down to route 4 and take some back roads back to my house to avoid the traffic from DC. It's a longer route, but I wouldn't be in stop in go traffic and it worked in my favor, except for the fact the fuel filter became worse and worse. Stopped at a autozone in Prince Frederick to see if I could cobble another filter together, no luck. Bought a filter that the guy behind the counter said the fittings worked on, got out to the car and the threads were the wrong pitch on one of the ends.. Reinstalled the old filter and hit the road again. Was able to make it to a buddies parents house, five miles from my place and stopped there. Had my buddy come and pick us up. He dropped Krista off, and we went to the auto parts store to buy some fuel line and clamps. Got back to the car, pulled the filter off, and by passed it with the hose. Car ran pretty good, but still sputtered a bit. So either the fuel system is really jacked and contaminated or the k-jet system is jacked up which means, carb time! So, the car is home, the torture is over, and I no longer want to light the car fire.

Quick and easy adapter to make a b21 fan work on a b20.

Welded up b20 t-stat housing.

Car running hot still, but not over heating. The t-stat never leaked and held up great!
