rgreen4
I'll check the solenoid for resistance, problem is that it is one of the first things pulled from a junker along w/ a working air pump. Any one have a radio shack part number for a proper resistor also can someone fill me in on determining which is pin 32 and 37 in the ECU?Thanks
Keaton85
They are labeled in the ECU... As for the resistor, a 30-35ohm one. Nothing special just whatever is in that range. Try and get a 1/4 watt or 1 watt just in case..
rgreen4
Ok Thanks for the info wouldn't have known unless I had opened an ECU before. won't get to it until the weekend got to clean up after SANDY.
rgreen4
Well I soldered in a new diode in my ECU between pins 32 and 37 w/ the band on the diode towards pin 37, bypassed the solenoid w/ a 33ohm resistor, unplugged the air pump and guess what CEL comes right back on w/ P0410 code. If someone can explain how to attach a pic I'll post a pic of the ECU.Any more ideas on this?
Volvo5.0
If you could have the codes read with the Volvo System Tester (VST) you would have a better idea what's causing the problem. There are 4 specific Volvo codes that get lumped together as the generic P0410 code. Knowing the exact code would point you in the right direction. rgreen4
I don't have a VST I've eliminated the the air pump by diconnecting it, and the solenoid w/ the resistor and the relay is new as well as 2 new O2 sensors, what could be left, isn't this fix suppose to take care of this? JohnZGLT
Newbie here, lots of Volvo history in family. 1998 S70 GLT. I got excited reading this as my pump went from jet noises to intermittent, running scraping sounds. Bah. No CEL for months of any kind. I pulled the ECU yesterday, ..no you don't need a tool, , just yank release lever, soldered recommended diode 32 ---|| 37, unplugged gray terminal in front of battery, unplugged vacuum line, only one I had at tree from solenoid, capped vacuum port, left it alone otherwise, didn't touch relay or anything else. CEL, 0410 10 miles later... I'm bummed, but will try another diode as my soldering skills a bit rusty. Thought it looked good. ??
Keaton85
Did you count the terminals correctly? It goes 30, 31, 32 and so forth. Not, 31, 32, 33... I always catch myself starting at one, not zero.

Counting back I soldered incorrectly 33---||38, will try again. :glare:
JohnZGLT
Hmm. No edit button That looks better...
mikhail
I have a 98 Volvo S70 T5. My air pump quit working about 4 years ago and I've been getting P0410 Secondary air injection system malfunction. This year, I could no longer pass an etest in Ontario, Canada if the secondary air system showed a fault so I decided to try the air pump delete method. I've soldered an N4005 diode directly into the ECU. After about a month of driving I was able to go all the system to "ready" status and successfully passed the etest yesterday. It appears that the ECU thinks that the air pump is operational. Thanks VolvoSpeed forums for this great write-up. This saved me a lot of trouble. PS. The P0410 code has not come back and no check engine light!

I always catch myself starting at one, not zero. Hi guys, I just bought a 1996 854 N/A with a 5 speed. My ECU is currently on my desk, I have counted the pins. BUT, where are the 'numbers' everyone keeps talking about? I haven't the foggiest idea which Bosh system I have - the box has J.2 on it. After soldering, is the next step unplugging the pump or can I leave that alone.
Keaton85
The numbers are on the white plastic. Kinda hard to see. Get a flashlight and look around and you will find them. Once you have the diode installed you must unplug the pump and block off the solenoid vacuum at the vacuum tree. All this has been covered about a half dozen times trough this topic. erikv11
So is it just me, or is the video on this page in the DIY section, telling people to solder the wrong pins? http://volvospeed.com/install_performance_parts_how_tos/performance_guides/sas-delete_air-pump.html I actually didn't find this, someone else posted it, but I looked and it sure seems like the video does not agree with the still images. And I know the images are right ...

I think Keaton85 might have caught that and mentioned it somewhere earlier in this thread. Just for the record, that's not my video. The guy who did that video, even though he can't count, has much better soldering skills than I do
