'98 C70 Deck Replacement

Recommended Posts

I've been looking to replace the in-dash changer with one-disc cd/mp3.

I have a couple of questions.

Is the stock system an Alpine?

Is there an external in there, too?

If so, will have to replace it at the same time?

Where can I get a replacement (install) kit that will match the gray trim on the dash?

I'm planning on replacing with Eclipse; my wife thinks that Alpine & other brands we've seen look way too "bling". We are trying to keep a stock look.

All input appreciated.

Jeff, the stock HU IS Alipine Does your C70 have the dash speaker? If it does there is a internal Dolby processor in the car, iirc, it's of the passenger side, under the dash somewhere. Is your dash the dark grey color? It might be charcoal (what volvo calls it) you can get single DIN install kits from Cardomain. Eclipse is a good head unit, I would reccomend Kenwood or JVC as well. Keeping the stock look is sort relative... you'll have to look around and decide what you think "looks stock"

ps- be sure to put your location in your profile, and fill out your signature! Welcome to Volvospeed!

edited for correctness.. thanks John..

More questions:

OK, geez!

It has a factory amp.

Will the factory amp work with a new deck?

If not, recommendations please.

Is there a way to integrate that dolby crap into my new setup?

If not, is there a way to, at least, integrate a speaker at that location in to the new setup?

I'm not interesting in setups that give me nonfunctioning speakers. Like I said, we want as close to stock functionality as possible, but upgrading to mp3 capability without that silly changer to monkey with.

Please help!

unfortunately i dont have as much experience with the c70s with dolby systems...but, will say this, when ever we have encountered a super premium stock system with itnernal amp and processing, 9.9 times out of 10, we either did nothing, or replcaed the entire system, meaning amps, speakers, headunit, etc etc...

the problem with tapping a aftermarket deck directly into a stock amp is that you will send too high level of a signal to the amp adn the amp will in turn send distorted signals (clipped signals) to the sepakres, whcih will sound bad and will most likely blow your amp and speakres. you can get around it with some systems by rewiring and by passing hte stock amp, but wih the c70's case, you will probably then loose your ability to use your dolby processor, not to mention your aftermarket deck probably wont be able to powr all 11 spekares or what ever it is the number in the c70 :) with out burning up...

so...my recommendations personally, would be to etiher leave it or alone or tape in a ipod or osmething with fm mod, or go the complete route and do a full swap. there maybe soething you can do in the middle by making a custom tap or what not, but i would say it would be a lot of work and i persoanlly wouldnt touch it :)

OK.

Thanks for the info.

I was at Car Toys today, & the big problem with preserving the 5-channel dolby operation of stock, is that you have to buy a 5-channel unit. The units he showed me were from $1200 to god knows where & all had mp3, DVD, double DIN screen & tons of other features; the higher end ones ($2300+) had navigation, too.

So we're talking about an install in the ballpark of $2000 - $$$$$$ !!

***** question *****

Does Volvo offer a replacement unit with single disc mp3 operation?

What about an in-dash multi-disc changer that handles the discs itself?

nope, iirc, there are No volvo units that will play MP3.

Yes, the HU-901 is a 3 disc changer, I think there is a 6 disc one as well. I had the 901 for a brief period, and it didn't like CD-R's at all. :(

if u have a c70..chances are u have a Sc900 or a Sc901...both require external amps....check the trunk of ur car, driver's side, behind the rear wheel...or under the front passenger's seat (5 will get u ten..its in the trunk)....i bet u can use the stock amp w/ other units (im not real knowledgeable on this) but ull hafto find a way to wire the speaker signals from the new hu to the amp....and ull lose the dolby unless u can find a way to plug it into the hu (small green plug on the back of ur hu for center channel speaker).

there was some discussion on Swede speed about mp3 players..u can make one werk in place of the 6 or 10 cd changer using the 8(?) pin wire on the back of the hu...i believe?

I have a 98 c70 that I replaced the stock dobly system with a eclipse cd8454. Right now I just added a Jl audio 300/4 amp inplace of the oem amp and ran rcas to the headunit for signal. All speakers works except center. But this is only for winter then I will redo the entire system and add another amp. But this will work if you want an aftermarket headunit. The 98 c70 had the Sc-901 with 4x100 oem amp. Taking the dolby processor out b/c not using with eclipse headunit.

Exactamundo!

I want to replace the 901 with another unit. one where my wife doesn't havta futz with that stupid "cartridge". We are also looking at eclipse units because they lack the chrome knobs & multicolored lights.

I think we have decided that we can live with losing the function of that center speaker. What do we do for the future, though? Is there a cupholder or something can put in it's place? I don't want a "dud" speaker hanging there!

Thanks a bunch for all the info, guys (or gals)!
