Timing belt isnt to bad, but if you dont know what your doing you can screw the engine up. The clutch is not very easy if you dont have a lift. Much hard than say a honda civic. There is a lot of labor involved there so your going to pay a lot.

As far as the value of the car, i say you could get 3k-4k for it if were fixed or running properly. If your not in a rush you can probably get more. I see 850 turbos selling for outrageous prices all the time, including these boards. To me the S70T5M is more desirable so if they can get that much for an 850 you should be able to get the same if not a little more.

 You commented without reading the whole thread? We've already ascertained the true value of a T5M with 204k miles on it. Try $3k or less.

put it up for a month and learn how to fix shit...you gain 3 things:

Knowledge: how to do a lot of maintenance yourself

Confidence: You don't have to question whether you can do it or not

A repaired car: self explanatory

Plus with the 1500 in labor you save you can do ALL the other stuff while engine and trans are apart...RMS, Oil O-rings etc etc...

Other option is to "repair" your credit and finance a 20k Acura (with DVD audio)

Either way you still have a used car...

Yeah but your looking at the value as a potential buyer. Put yourself in his shoes, and you have the car for sale. You would want to get the most possible for the car. You would be saying its highly desirable because of the 5 spd.

If i were looking as a buyer, i would say yeah ill give you 1k-2k max. Now if i was the seller i would be wanting to get a whole lot more regardless of what everyone was saying.

Im just trying to help the guy out so he doesnt get raped. They are hard to find regardless of how old or how many miles the car has. I know i had a hard time finding mine when i was looking.

I'm looking at it as both a potential buyer and a potential seller. I'm telling you I've seen these cars listed for all kinds of prices but every conversation I've had for the last 3 years tells me that they sell for what I explained earlier in this thread. I track the market for this particular car probably closer than anyone else on this forum. Maybe more closely than anyone other than JRL over on Swedespeed.

And trust me, they're not as rare as you think they are - when you expand your search nationwide, even better across all of North America, you'd be surprised how many turn up in a year. There was one in Philly last December with 34k miles on it that sold for $9.5k and it was absolutely pristine at the dealer. I just turned away from a T5M here in Chicago with 67k miles on it - and that was a dealer car where they were willing to let it go for $6100 out the door. So you tell me, how does that hold up against this car with 204k miles on it and several issues?

The only person who cares about the manual transmission and actually sees it as a higher selling point is an enthusiast because to the rest of the market, they see it the same way NADA and KBB do: cheaper and more of a hassle.

He can list it for more, and it's not a bad strategy, but if it's a totally unreasonable price then the car will sit forever. I've watched a number of these precious T5Ms sit a LONG time because the owner was unwilling to recognize market dynamics and the reality of pricing. Sure, it's possible you could get a higher price for it, but you would have to be willing to sit and WAIT for that one buyer who is local and willing to pay that price. In fact, there's one on Swedespeed right now with 67k miles on it where the owner believes he should get $8000 for his car (started at $9.5k) and it's been sitting for months now. There was a similar one in Colorado that took 1.5 years to sell before he finally knocked the price down to $6500 and it finally sold.

List it at $3500 and prepare to sell it for $2500. That's what I would do. If you get no responses after a couple of weeks (and you'll need to relist your ad every few days to keep it up and visible to people - a stale CL ad tells people no one's calling you and therefore they can push your price down) then drop it to $3000 and sell it.

Examples of cars just like yours:

1998 S70 T5M with 248k miles - $3500 (been sitting for two months now)

1998 S70 T5M with 214k miles - $2500 (been sitting for 7 weeks)

1998 S70 T5M with 134k miles - $3500 (4 weeks)

And for the inevitable question - this is about stock cars. Highly modify and well maintained, then pricing becomes a different conversation. But also a much narrower market.

well if it were mine i would hold on to it, the right buyer will come, i wouldnt be in a rush. regardless, you dont come across them everyday or normally, you have to search the whole USA to find 1. Its not like a civic where you see them everywhere so they are rare which makes them more valuable

thanks for the info guys. i realize learning to repair myself would be ideal, but with two small kids, it isnt exactly a hobby the luxury of spare time has afforded me.

Honestly then sell the car, get what you can. go out and buy reliable transportation with 175,000 fewer miles or do what another member did. trade in his cherry 98 s70 and buy a acura tl 6 speed, according to him you will repair your credit and save money in the long run.

i have three kids and a bitchy wife...you can do it if you want to

no everyone has the luxury of having a shop to do things in, myself not included in that statement :P then again i do stuff in my garage not at my shop since that is for work

Well after much consideration with the wife, im going to let the ol girl go, not my wife, the volvo ha ha.

Will post it in the for sale area tonight with images if i'm allowed to based on the rules of the forum. its my daily driver, i dont have the ability to be without a car for a day while i monkey with it on jack stands to try and repair things myself, nor do i wish to pay high prices of a shop to repair at this stage. she served me well, 50K miles i put on her and she owes me nothing.

Supply and demand...true T5m's are rare. There were less than 650 produced over all three years. Last time I checked rare cars fetch higher dollar amounts. It doesn't matter that the manuals were cheaper than autos brand new, because autos are a dime a dozen, you can find them anywhere as they were produced in higher numbers. With the mindset many of you are using Chevy Belairs and cars like that should sell for $3000 like they did back in the 50's because that was their price then. Holy flawed logic Batman!
