The "turbo, Rwd,5 Speed, K-jet" Project

Thanks Mike.

Basically, the car mostly sat since the last update. I drove it right around Christmas 2011 but ended up with excessive oil pressure, the car was spewing oil from everywhere and into the exhaust. I decided to park it rather than risk doing any damage.

Sent the turbo for a rebuild, pulled the oil cooler and the car sat. My job took off and the car lost my attention. Since it's impossible to get anything done in 45 minutes, I kept waiting for the 3-4 hour window to open up. Didn't happen until this past week. The fact that another couple of cars for work are coming through Lexington lit a fire under my butt.

Pulled the engine and transmission Saturday.

I've since separated the engine and transmission. That answered the question about why the car was parked in the first place: one of the discs is worn down to the springs....

Anyway, goal is to have the engine opened up and inspected by end of the week. I'll check the oil pump, cylinder walls, coolant passages to make sure everything's clean and working. Once that's done, it'll go back in with a fresh OEM clutch.

Is it in Group B trim yet?

Group B trim can be many things. I'm not going for the Maxi look, this is a car that would be best in its mostly original state.

Here is one for sale in Quebec, David has done a ton of work on it but he's moving on: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/renault-5-turbo-2-/290805146704?forcev4exp=true#ht_500wt_1182

How man!

I kinda understand why your French is that good!

Really nice R5! Even in France they're pretty rare!

Of you need a hand in France, let me know, even if you have a good network with car import/export I guess!

Nice work on the body parts and the engine!

That thing is sweet, must be hard to drive it at the limit though.

Found out my neighbor has one of these just sitting in his garage, same color too! After reading this thread I went and chatted him up about it, to his surprise!

Awesome looking car, I'm super jelly of both of you.

Je suis de Grenoble. :D Expat depuis plus de la moitié de ma vie, mais je me rappelle d'une Turbo qu'avais un voisin, une des toutes premieres avec le super tableau de bord et j'ai toujours eu un point faible pour ces voitures.

I have never tried, oddly enough. It never felt right enough to push to its limits so I ended up dismantling the car bit by bit.

Did you isolate the cause of the over pressure? Or are you hoping it will be evident on disassembly?

That other one is cool, but personally I'd want one like yours, that needs a tear down. Best way to get up close & personal with a new car :-)

The car was parked (b/c of the clutch, I think) about 13 years before I bought it. It was "made to run" by the shop that sold it to me in CA, but those :arob: never had it running well, it would barely idle. I got it running with some basic fuel system fixes but it was never right. Did an oil change since I had my doubts that those tools had used adequate oil and when I used synthetic, I essentially flushed out any gunk from the system. That caused a bunch of gunked up oil to go into the oil cooler, blocking it and creating the excessive oil pressure. But I'm still checking the oil pump this week, as well as all oil passages in the engine when we take it apart.

Tell him to call me if he wants to sell it. No joke, I get about 3-4 requests for these cars each month, they're still very much in demand.

Excellent une T2 version US, j'avais encore jamais vu ça.... Tu lui fait une restauration complète ???

Si tu as besoin de quoi que ce soit, tu n'hésites pas.

This is Grey market vehicle, never officially imported into the US. But Sun International was one of 2-3 importers who knew how to do it legally. It has a clear US title and is insured like a regular car. I have every intention of racking up miles on it as soon as I can. :o
