V55 CS
Quick bumpage since I am not good about keeping up with threads. Pulled the head, no major surprise (thankfully...) 101_4312 by Exim-Cars, on Flickr Pull more parts to expose the cam: 101_4310 by Exim-Cars, on Flickr Cam looked good, happy Matt is happy. (didn't want to have to take the bottom end apart...) I haven't measured to see if the block had sagged yet. 101_4311 by Exim-Cars, on Flickr These engines are known to cave in between the 2nd and 3rd cylinder over time. I have very small tolerances to work with, so if that's the case here, I'll have some serious work. Head needs a thorough cleaning/prepping. 101_4295 by Exim-Cars, on Flickr Anyway, I haven't finished the prep for the new HG yet. My goal is to have it completely prepped and re-assembled this week but we'll see how things play out.
V55 CS
matt b
I really do suck at updates. Clutch was done on the car, the old throw out bearing was shot too but thankfully I had sourced another one. Engine and transmission are back in the car, I gave the car an IV of Royal Purple gear oil earlier this week: Untitled by Exim-Cars, on Flickr Sorry about the crappy filter on the picture, error when uploading to Flickr. Untitled by Exim-Cars, on Flickr It's been slow going partly because of other projects like this beast: Untitled by Exim-Cars, on Flickr But mostly because getting any fitting, any filter or part for this car usually involves a few solid hours or research unless I want to pay a premium for French parts from France. Decided to keep the current filter location (underneath the intercooler, and just behind the alternator) but I have everything to relocate it in a few weeks. Untitled by Exim-Cars, on Flickr Using steel braided hoses whenever possible, this stuff needs to hold up.
Commander Riker
Nice work, Matt!! You definitely have some great cars on hand. Turbo 5... and now a proper land cruiser!! Jelly to say the least.
matt b
Lucas! How's Texas ? Are you coming through anytime soon ? FJ will be for sale soon. It's a cool truck but it's as raw as they get and not very practical for what I need.
Commander Riker
Texas is pretty awesome!! Kickass weather... good roads. Gotta watch out for broken windshields, though... lots of rocks. There's a possibility I could pass through later in the spring. Should that happen, I will make sure to bug ya. Would love to see the Turbo5 again, and all you've done to it. gdizzle
I didn't realize it was a pushrod engine.
lookforjoe
Cool to see progress! Keeping a list of parts resources to pass on to the next owner?
MBXPilot
Nice stuff Matt! I really would like to come see your shop sometime. You know how much I love old French cars haha
matt b
Greg: yes, and it turned over well friday when I primed the turbo and checked a few things. Found the valve cover bolts loose so I was starting to see some oil seep just above the exhaust manifold. Good thing I check and double check everything. I'll need to adjust the timing since the flywheel moved when I torqued down the clutch. Hussein: I use the MR from Renault (manuel de réparation), it's what a Renault tech would have used to maintain the car. All torque settings, part numbers and problem shooting come from that binder, it's pretty handy. Next owner (which hopefully won't have the car too soon) will also have a detailed list of items replaced on the car, with invoices. Then there will be the spare part pile, since the car came with used spares as well. Logan: my shop is still my garage. The shop is Andrew's Dad, he retired and I work on some of my stuff there. But come by anytime, I should be home most of the time through the end of May.
lookforjoe
I would love to see this one in the flesh :-) Great that you have the factory manuals - no substitute for reliable specs etc. I always take anything listed in Haynes, Chilton, etc with a large grain of salt!
