fischmama
Here is a small update. Quick test fit on my engine. I had to remove the engine to fix some issues (not sure how serious yet).

BlackT5
Does the compressor housing even fit?
fischmama
Looks worse than it is...keep in mind the engine I had to even remotely test fit it was the old style (-98) Does the compressor housing even fit? Aehm....it fits...with a custom torque mount.
550
Most likely we will end up moving the torque mount. :-)
scandalo
I had an idea on the ride home... how about clocking the pipe so the turbo sits at an angle? Theoretically it would clear the mound and point the downpipe more towards the bottom allowing easier fab. Only thing would be the intake pipe would still be in the way but still would be easier than making a custom mount.
lookforjoe
I want to see pics of the compressor in place. Curious how you will mod the torque mount effectively, would like to see your ideas on that too. Good Luck! (Not being sarcastic)
550
Most likely we will end up moving the torque mount. :-) Haha quoted just because. I want to see pics of the compressor in place. Curious how you will mod the torque mount effectively, would like to see your ideas on that too. Good Luck! (Not being sarcastic) I guess the main option is moving the mount itself over ~2 inches or so towards the driver side of the car. We had at one point thought about redesigning the upper torque mount using a damper of sorts but put it to the wayside when we didn't see the need for it as much.(Now the need is more... present per-se) The stock mount "arm" is rather bulky, but can be made much smaller. And it tends to "wrinkle" in the middle. There has also been some talk about solid engine mounts as well, which would minimize the need for a crazy upper torque mount. I mean this isn't Justus' daily car so friendliness on the road is really moot. I had an idea on the ride home... how about clocking the pipe so the turbo sits at an angle? Theoretically it would clear the mound and point the downpipe more towards the bottom allowing easier fab. fischmama
Once I put my engine back in (sometime this week hopefully) I will check various positions to see if cutting the up-pipe a bit will help clearance with the compressor housing. Kinda goes in the opposite direction on where I wanted to go with this. I would love to have the turbo visible near the top of the engine. A different torque mount was a thought at one point and still is, like Joe said more so now than before. BUT even with solid mounts a torque mount would still be needed in my opinion. I mean I have a solid delrin mount on the firewall side and poly on the engine.Well, this is what happened to the front motor mount. Now I want to make sure I don't come accross like Jim and over promise. This is only something I thought about for a while and wanted to see if it can become a reality. Volvo5.0
I mean I have a solid delrin mount on the firewall side and poly on the engine.Well, this is what happened to the front motor mount. Was that an original Volvo mount or aftermarket?
fischmama
Was that an original Volvo mount or aftermarket? The new one on the right is a URO aftermarket. The one that broke probably too but I am not 100% sure about that.

Would it be possible to cut the up-pipe at the same angle on both sides before attaching the flanges, this would keep the turbo level and move it towards the passengers side allowing more room for the compressor and intake to move around the torque mount (though it may not leave much room for exhaust). It seems redesigning the up-pipe would be easier than designing a new torque mount.
