Austin H
So I figured my bulb burnt out on my HID kit. I ordered new ones and went to go check them out and the didn't fire up. Swapped ballast, swapped bulbs. Busted out the Volt meeter and the plug from the car to the light bulbs (AKA ballasts) isn't getting power. It's not a ballast light problem. I'm simply getting no power from the car. What should I check? Fuses are good.
Austin H
The high beems are getting power.
Che'_Moderator
Ground your meter to the battery and see if you have power. If still no go check and make sure you have continuity back to the ground on the battery. If thats a no go start checking the hot. Fuse would be obvious place to look then relay. You can just ground to the + and start checking continuity back from the socket. Also why is your meter not set for DCV?
Austin H
lol the V meter has a 12V auto setting, just used that. I checked it against ground on battery and no luck. Off to work but I'll swap my extra relays tomorrow and see where that's at. Fuses are fine. Thanks Chuck. Didn't even think about the relays. Do I just need to check the big grey one or do the J relays have anything to do with it?
Che'_Moderator
Can be any of them on the same circuit as the headlights.
BEJinFBK
Is it just one of the low beams?
Austin H
Is it just one of the low beams? Yup. Drivers side low beam. Everything else works.
BEJinFBK
Yup. Drivers side low beam. Everything else works. That is a 70 series, right? You didn't say in your post, but it looks like it in your sig. Each lamp has it's own fuse. ( That's right - There are 4 ). I'd have a look at # 21. Turn on the lights and use that meter to check both nibs on top of the fuse. You should see the same voltage on each side, coming in and going out. I know you said the fuses were good, but it's worth a shot. Post back with results. And the year, please.
Che'_Moderator
All Volvos I know of made in the the last 20 years except for heavy trucks have one fuse per bulb
Austin H
So the connector itself was fubar. Checked everything, went crazy, cut the thing to switch my high beams with the lows (was planning on both sides but started on the bad side first) so I could at least have two headlights and had power up to the connector. Went to junkyard and cut one out of that and wired it up. Simple enough but frustrating. Not quite sure why the connector wasn't making contact. There isn't any stress on the plug... Thanks for all the replies!
Che'_Moderator
If it started to get intermentant contact it would have started to arch and probably melted on itself.
(_8*(l)Homer
There was most likely a recall on your 70 series (at least S and V). They replace the parking/head light switch and add some connector at the end of the headlight sockets. Have you checked for a recall? I'd start there, but I agree with previous repliers that this is most likely a ground or a relay issue.
crazykn
The recall for the 70 series added a harness to the existing connector, it basically had a resistor in line in that harness. It looks like a cable extender (about 4-6 inches long).
