DevolvR
I picked up a set of wheels for a Jaguar XF with a full set of winter tires for $400, the set was with 245/45/18 Pirelli Sottozero with barely any use. So I got them dismounted, sold the tires for $450 and paid my tire guy $40 for the dismount. It also came with Jag TPMS, but 2 were damaged. 2 others were still good bit not sure how much they are worth. 5x108 with 76mm center bore 18"x8 Ronal R38s ET 42 in 2 tone silver with machined edge. Has a but of rash but I'll be sanding those out. More pics later when mounted, but I think I did pretty well for myself! So here are the pics of the wheels dismounted and cleaned up a bit and hand dryed. Had quite a bit of brake dust residue which was a oh yeah! to clean. Since I got these wheels for nothing, wanted to make them pop a little more for money next to nothing. PlastiDip to the color I want to match my car: First coat: Second coat: And third coat: Top Coat of: Paint: Krylon Fusion Textured Shimmer Metallic Black <- does not look black at all though. More like Dark Grey Metallic Light Coat: Peeling off the machined edge: Using a exacto knife to cut the edges before peeling as it'll lift the other parts if you don't. Finished Product: Just to clarify. PlastiDipping wheels are a temporary solution, they will eventually wear down during long term use (and I mean a 2-3 years maybe). But they are a great solution to wheels that you don't want to damage from it's stock appearance, and to test out different colors on them without the commitment. Plastidip is also very easy to work with, and lays on very evenly without much technique. You will need at least 3-4 coats, as you need the build up enough plastidip so that it can peel off. Ol' Dirty Noodle
Nice dude I always wondered if that'd work, bout to try that on my winter wheels
Che'_Moderator
Looks good. I would have masked it off or used PVA though. If they last a year I will be amazed, but it is a good idea for trying out different colors :
boxpin
I still love your car. Oh, rims look good btw.
Serge
That is a fantastic idea. It's like color skins for your wheels. Good work.
Aequitas_Veritas
Are these your winter wheels? Cause even though they look pretty damn good, your old wheels are much sexier.
DevolvR
Yep, winter, perfect test to see if Plastidipped finish would hold up.

If they last a year I will be amazed, but it is a good idea for trying out different colors : Problem with masking off is that the Plastidip will still be sprayed on the mask, and that coating is enough to "connect" with the parts you're not masking. So once you peel off, you'll still need a knife to separate the 2 surfaces from the bond.

adamjjohn203
Looks good and gives you a good idea of what they'd look like.....but I had plastidip on my roof rack fairing and the sprayer at the wash bay took that off pretty easily. Especially if you don't prep the existing paint on the wheels.
DevolvR
Thats why leading edge gets a couple layers that you tear away between coats. True, but given the detail complexity of applying such a mask. I'd rather just do it this way, it'll take a long enough time to mask all the edges just for one mask layer. Under your suggestion, it'll take some a good hour or so just to even start spraying. Which is why I decided to go with the peeling method, which is the beauty of Plastidip, I have a steady hand and a good eye so this to me is no problem. But of course, it may be worthwhile for someone else to take on your suggestion. Looks good and gives you a good idea of what they'd look like.....but I had plastidip on my roof rack fairing and the sprayer at the wash bay took that off pretty easily. Especially if you don't prep the existing paint on the wheels. I guess it depends on what you're trying to spray it on, and the amount of coats you put on it. For wheels, as long as they are clean wax-free and the surface is smooth, I think Plastidip sticks on a bit better. So rusty old wheels or severely oxidized surfaces would be not a good solution.
