At Least Nothing Broke!

That's really the only good thing I can say about my first ever trip to the track. I was hoping to get into the 13's, and after my first run I thought I could get there.

My first pass I bogged slightly coming off the line, and felt like I was driving way to conservative. But it was my first track experience, so I was trying to get a feel for it. Funny thing is, that turned out to be my best run of the night...14.350@104mph

When I tried to get more aggressive that's when I started having problems. My next pass I thought I actually did break something. I dumped the clutch at the line at about 3k rpm, floored it, and the car just sat there :o I thought for a second I had blown up the clutch, but I was just smoking the tires. The next pass I babied it off the line, figuring I could make up time in 2nd and 3rd. When I shifted to 2nd I again smoked the tires.

That's how the rest of the night went, never could get the car to hook up. I had put my original 16" Perfos back on for the track, because I didn't want to burn off my good 17" tires. I'm guessing 205/55/16 Michelin MXV's probably aren't ideal for track use

I can get a good deal on a set of 16x6.5 steel wheels. I have access to many used tires. What would be the fattest tire I could squeeze on these rims for track use? Am I still going to be disappointed? Should I just bite the bullet and get a LSD?

For drag racing only--M/T ET Drag, 24.5x8x15. Cut your 60ft time down by a half second or more, and you will have full traction by 2nd gear onwards.

What do the steel rims come on stock? Volvo or other make? 8" wide

The widest 15" steel wheel I've seen is 6.5" wide. I know Volvo makes a 7" wide 16" steelie. Anyone know of anything bigger?

Do not put a heavy ass steel rim on a drag car. Get some light spun or forge rims.

They are better than 17's, there was 4 tenths and 5 mph difference in my R when the only change was the wheels.

Same tires?

Same day?

A week apart, track conditions were close enough to not be an issue. Tires on the 17's actually had good tread, 15's looked like this....

Those steelies are 7" wide. You don't really need anything bigger to fit an 8" wide slick anyways.

should be able to stuff these in

Guess those 15s wouldn't clear 302s.

I guess you could swap the brakes back to the smaller rotors for the track, but it seems like it would be a PITA. That's why I was thinking about the 16" steel wheels. Until I get a set I'm not even 100% sure they would clear.

Yeah, I was looking at the Hoosier's at the Tire Rack http://www.tirerack....R6DDR&tab=Sizes

Our shop has a wholesale account with Tire Rack and we buy A LOT of tires from them. Maybe I could get a "special" price. Can't hurt to ask :)

Its though to launch the car at the track with the quick spool of the K24. I had the same issue. I did long burn outs to get the tires to be as sticky as possible. I never got to finish the second run, and blew the diff and a hole in my transmission.

If you put hoosiers on the car with a stock diff you will almost certainly ruin it, esp when you are going to dump the clutch to launch.
