Installed Ipd Springs In C70 Today... Lols Ahead

So I swapped the springs over today, great to be doing my own strut work (was quoted 400 just to switch out the 4 springs...by a local garage...) - that being said what the hell is this about :

2LXlp.jpg

The wheel is sitting RIGHT on the strut... both sides... it fits fine, lugs in fine and just *kisses* the strut...

I have 10mm spacers on the way, assuming that will be plenty of clearance... but currently this makes for an awful "BANG BANG BANG" sound when turning... (not as much turning right, mostly turning left...-weight leaning on the right side-)

Wheels are 17" OEM Pegs.

Struts came out of the 850- however I checked with autozone and the part #'s they offer for the c70 and the 850 (for these gabriel struts) are identical, also we did a visible comparison for like 20 minutes... saw no differences between the stock c70 struts and these 850 struts... and being as these 850 ones were just replaced less than 5k ago, i figured id use them.

Replaced all the top parts of the struts, new seats/mount etc, both sides, and of course then the ipd springs.

Anyone had this happen? Spacers should fix it right? :)

Must've put something in wrong, that should be like that. The camber is adjustable with only the amount of wiggle between the strut and knuckle bolts. You can try loosening the strut-to-knuckle bolts and leaning the camber out a bit and re-tightening. But still, it shouldn't be that close to begin with.

EDIT: Did you happen to get it aligned yet?

+1 exactly what i was thinking check the camber angle. unfortanatly if he goes to get an allighnment it may damage the tire and wheel.

17" OEM pegs are always very close to the strut, about a mm or a little less. This is usually plenty of clearance as wheels and struts don't flex much. My guess is these gabriel struts have holes that are just a tiny fraction of a mm bigger than stock, or the shock bodies are just a tiny bit thicker allowing the wheels to get closer to the struts. When the wheels and struts flex ever so slightly going around turns the wheel makes slight contact with the strut. The wheel also probably isn't completely true causing it to only make contact once every revolution thus making the banging noise you talk about.

The solution is simple, wait for your spacers. I'm currently running 5mm spacers with my pegs to prevent the oversize rim protector on my 225s from contacting the strut.

Getting an alignment will not damage the wheels and tires, the only thing they adjust when doing an alignment is the tie rod length. This couldn't possibly change the position of the wheel relative to the strut.

Also, pcguru, what do you think of the gabriels? just curious how they ride/handle

of course getting an allighnment wont damage the tires/ wheels, but wat i was saying is that driving to the alighnment shop with the wheels in ther current postion may damage the wheel and tire  lol. but i also agree that the strut mounting holes may be a little larger. but as soon as you push the hub assembly up to correct the camber and tightin the bolt, it should pinch the strut to the hub and it should be stuck in place even under load if ther is any play than its not correctly tightned. and from the pictures the struts look used so if ther wasnt an issue befor than why is ther an issue now. even thow the spring rate has changed and the car is lower the bottom of the strut will never change its postion in relevance to the wheel. but from the picture it looks like the camber is way off and him saying this was his first time he may not have known to push the hub assembly up to correct the camber. i run those same size wheels and tires and i dont have this issue on a 1.75" drop ^_^ .

I think you are right, the gabriel struts must be different by some fraction of an inch that we didn't see, I didn't realize the pegs ran so close but if that is the case, that certainly makes sense.

As far as the ride of the gabriels... They are EXCELLENT- in the 850, not so much, but in my c70 the ride ( in terms of smoothness) doesn't seem to have changed at all having added the ipd springs- in the 850 it was a bumpy whore but thus far the these struts are nice... well see how long they last.

I think the 850 was just a rattle box in general compared to the c70 so perhaps that is why i thought poorly of the struts then...

It doesn't seem to be doing any damage to the wheels- this is my only transportation outside of a motorcycle and given the rainy weather, ive put nearly 50 miles on the car in the past few days, with the wheels snug on the struts... i pulled the wheel, it has no damage, nor does the tire (the picture above shows that the tire doesn't touch anything though)...

Granted i take it a lot easier in the corners... but rolling straight is smooth and quiet (a little vibration at highway speeds but that migth just be the alignment off...)

I think the sound it makes has me thinking it is far worse that it really is... guess we will see, hopefully the spacers will arrive soon :)

Thanks!
