96 850 Turbo Vs 2003 Bmw M5 (e39)

I haven't posted up any of my races, because they weren't really note worthy...

But recently I had a good friend of mine who I've been trying to entice to give me a run, finally cave. He always had an excuse... new clutch, low on gas, always some BS, but this past weekend, we went out and had some fun...

With the cooler temps my car has been an absolute monster, but the downside is traction is noticeably much worse (very much on my winter to do list is a gripper or quaife)...

So goes with out saying that the only pull we did from a dead stop was all in his favor as he moved forward and I stayed in one place for the most part...

We finally got in some nice second gear pulls (40mph) territory, and again traction was a problem, but once I got traction, it was no contest. we would be dead even, I even let him get the jump, just because I didn't want any excuses, and do to loss of traction , I would be a 1/2 car length behind, but by the top of 2nd I would be at his front fender already, and third was a very comfortable stroll, with my car pulling on him no questions asked. We would have shut these all down in 110 - 125mph range.

The one pull we did in third gear, starting roughly at 60mph and up to the end of third which form me is ~110mph, was no contest. I again let him jump it, and this time though I got to front of his front doors, and once I laid into it, I just walked away again....

We rendezvoused later at my house we had other friends with us, I finally brought it up since he hadn't mentioned anything, and by his own admission, "once the turbo spooled, and you managed to keep traction, there was no catching you"

His is dealer maintained and I have driven it myself it is in great condition, and it is a manual, his is also completely stock, no performance work done to it. He can appreciate cars, but by no means is he the kind of guy that would work on a car himself...

So for me I felt on top of the world and wanted to challenge a coworker of mine who has a 2011 Mustang GT. We have always talked trash just for fun, and hes driven mine, and I've driven his, and I honestly would have thought the BMW to be the bigger challenge of the two....

On paper:

2003 M5

394BHP

4,026lbs

2011 Mustang GT

402BHP (regular grade gasoline, and thats all this guy puts in it).

3,533lbs

so right off the bat the you can see the BMW is 500 lbs heavier, with HP being a marginal difference. I think it might come down to gear ratios...

When I drove both cars, the M5 had seemed more impressive to me, but thats just because its an M5 and that played more into it, but of the two I remember the M5 being the one that left me with a better impression.

GT owner finally told me, he's over $50K into his car, and its the newer, bigger, badder, V8 and if I went up against him and lost, oh well its just a 15 year old, Volvo sedan. If I win, well how would that make him feel, he's impression is I have nothing to lose, and he's got nothing to gain.

He says win or lose, i cant say hey my car pulls on a 16year old Volvo, what would be the point of that...

I'll see if I can get him to bite, as I think that would be a fun race...

thanks for the compliments on the m5 kill. I know what u mean, regarding the type of drivers that generally drive the mustangs. He wasn't one but is slowly turning into one... Oh, well I do agree with him as in he has nothing to gain even if he beat me. The question is how big is his curiosity, of what the Volvo can do.

I like how mr bimmer didn't want to bring up the fact that he got walked by a Volvo...Rub it in!

nahhh, actions speak louder than words and I gave him props for being honest.

I raced an E39 years ago when my car was in the 315-320whp range. If you start from low speed in 2nd gear they are actually very quick and take some time to catch. Good running ones anyway, they have a whole bunch of sensors that need to be tip top or they're down 50hp (mafs are weak)

3rd gear is a very good gear for an 850 and if starting in 3rd with 300+whp the M5 has no chance to 120 BUT it will actually be a tough competitor after that. 140-150 comes up quick and they keep on going to 180+ if you let them... (with the limiter removed) so given enough space they will leave a fast 850 behind.

With me being in and around ~320 - 335whp, what you say makes sense.

I am sure his car is in tip top condition, he only gets it serviced regularly at the dealer, and isn't a daily driver, his other car is an AUDI A6 (something or other). This is by all means is his toy and he does baby it (for the most part).

and with what you've stated above, pretty much coincides with my statement, that in second it was a challenge as in my case I was having traction issues, but once I had traction, I chased him down and pulled him in, and once I shifted to third, I just walked away...

We did get up to 200km/hr+ (125mph+), so did shift into fourth a couple of times, but wasn't for long, as the distance I had put on him in third, was enough that didn't substantiate I keep going... so I'm just gonna have to take your word on it (180mph+ that's like 288kmh), I have no interest in going that fast, acceleration is my drug, not speed...
