Sunroof Solar Cell Trickle Charger Plans

i wonder if theres enough clearence to put a small solar panel or somesort under the sunroof not blocking the entire section just a small portion. have it so the sunroon can fully fuction normally. id wire the panel down the pillar into the engine bay to a trickler charger system into the battery. the solar panel im looking at doesnt need to be powerfull at all . just something to know there will always be a good start on a cold morning. the panel would be somehow attached to the plexiglass (or whatever material the sunroof is)

problem number one is snow. then light doesnt get to it. i was then thinking of adding a defroster grid to the sunroof somehow if thats possibe (wouldnt that be a first)

this is what i had first looked at as far as panels goes

I remember the A8 Audi have as optional a fancy system, but with the cooling purpose during summer(was running a small fan to cool the car inside). search a bit around for more efficient panels R-shack are crappy.

the 2010 prius has this option as well for cooling. it uses the solar energy to run the fans while the car is parked to cool the cabin, avoiding the oven car effect.

I was on the same topic last month and I just purchased a 5w solar panel thinking to mount under sunroof but first it has an aliminium casing that limits the clerance in the sunroof area, second a 5w solar panel can charge a 74amp battery in 18 days(thinking that you have 10 hours sun straight) or 0.4amps a day.So I turned to a more powerful solar panel.I will be buying a 20w panel and charge the battery while I am in a picnic or at seaside :) but the panel itself will be a big one and it will be hard to carry in the trunk.

i wouldnt want it to charge a dead battery, just one that would keep my battery fresh at ~12.5v. its my dd so it never sits longer than a day or two.

I think a flexable panel would fit better,They are not as bulky. I have one that I use, I just roll it out in the back window though.

Like this

good idea, thanks!

i just need a winter (wait is it actually winter outside its way to warm) project to keep me busy and id like to install something more permanent.

Plus being able to tell people you have a solar trickle charger in your car is baller

instead of turbo charged id get a sticker that says trickle charged

i could say my car has a twin charger setup

------

on a serious note the 12watt series comes with two panels. id put one on front window and one on back? why you say? why not? give me greater surface area and being on two sides of the car would give me better coverage from apt., home , comercial buildings shadows. i dont want to have a solar panel dictate how i park!! granted if its considered overkill then consider it overkill. if its worth doing its worth over doing

for the trickle system or whatever ill just take apart my black n decker light that has its own 12v trickle system. ill see what voltage it settles at. i have a spare battery in my room that i can test it on and see if it works. if it works ill install and best of all do a write up
