What Can I Do About A Leaky Hardline On A Steering Rack?

I've got a 1991 940 with one of the hardlines on the steering rack rotted. I went to a guy who's really good with volvo's and he wasn't able to find the part. So I took it out myself thinking maybe I can use a brake flaring tool to make one. The nuts themselves look like standard nuts but It looks like it would be very difficult to make the unusual flare.... It flares out under the nut, then flares back in to an even smaller diameter than what the line is, then flares back out with a rubber seal on the small diameter.

What do I do about this? Is there a tool I can get without too much money to do this tricky flaring? Is this tricky flaring in other vehicles so maybe I could buy any tube that has it and cut and splice it with standard brake line connectors?

I would think that would work just fine.

While I don't know where to source a tool to make that o-ring seal type flange flare, and I imagine the tool could cost more than a new (rebuilt) rack, IINM you should be able to buy adapters to convert from o-ring to flare type, at least I know you can convert from flare to o-ring for AC applications, a good car parts store should be able to look that up. Otherwise you might get a radiator shop to try to repair your existing line or try to find a used one.

he could also try a local hydraulic place, my brother had a company make him a new hard line for his power steering for about 20 bucks.. i cant say that it will be the case for him.. but you never know.

Is the line leaking where it crosses the other line?

When I repaired mine, the other line let go!

It is likely that you will not find any fasteners or fittings with the extra fine thread that Volvo uses.

I bought new lines at the dealer, I still have them because the second time I replaced the outside line I stripped the rack!

If you want the lines that I have, I'll sell them to you for $20 plus shipping.

If you are interested, email me.

I could not replace the inside line without taking the rack off the car.

If you decide to remove the rack, get the bolts out of the cross member first - that takes the most time because of corrosion on the portion of the bolts inside the cross member.
