I put some XC90 brakes on an S60, and used the mounting bracket and calipers from the XC90. The calipers that were used here look suspiciously like the XC90 calipers. I suspect this could be done with the XC90 calipers, the only problem is the mounting bracket. Look at this post, and you'll see the mounting bracket, and how I made it work.

I just don't know if the bolt spacing is the same on the 850 and the S60 is the same or not, just haven't had time to test that out. Guess I should try.

If the XC90 brakes work, they have the same caliper, but there are 2 different sized discs for the front, 316mm diameter, and 336 mm diameter. Obviously, I chose the larger size. It's been a while, but I recall that the 2 different disc sizes required different mounting brakets, but the calipers themselves are the same. Only problem that might crop up with the XC90 discs is that they have a larger center hole in the disc, so you have to be sure you have it centered when you mount it and bolt it in place with the small bolt that goes into the hub to hold the disc on.

I think more needs to by said about which brackets need to be used. Logic would tell me that I need to use the V50 brackets(since they pair to the caliper) and add material to allow mounting to the 850/X70 hubs, but i could be wrong.

Just a heads up. If you are searching salvage yards online, most of the yards that show the calipers in stock do not have the correct calipers. A lot of the cars came with 300mm rotors, and most of the yards I talked to swore they had the 320mm version, but did not. Make sure they email or text a picture of what they have so you know what you are getting.

So I guess I'm going to give this a go. Searched for 2 days and finally found the parts needed from a 2010 V50 AWD with only 8K miles on it! The yard didn't want to sell me the rotors since they were rusty like hell and looked horrible, but I was able to convince the guy to give them to me for just the additional shipping cost.

I don't normally machine Volvo rotors, but figured maybe they would clean up enough to use. Don't really want to spend a lot on this until I know for sure it will work. As bad as the rotors looked it was just a heavy surface rust. I did a couple of passes on the brake lathe to remove the rust, and then a final pass just to make sure it was true. The original thickness on a new rotor is 25mm I think, and the minimum thickness is 23mm. After machining, the rotors measured 24.63mm, so I think they'll be OK....

Here is a comparison to original 850/x70 brakes (not 302's).....

I'll mock everything up next week and see what's involved. I know the first thing that needs to be done is to enlarge the center bore of the V50 rotor. It's close to 2mm smaller than the 850/x70 rotor. It needs to be pretty exact since that is what centers the rotor, so not sure I want to use a die grinder on it. I'll make a few calls to see how much to have it done correctly.

Looking at the pic, does it actualy need to be welded, or would a threaded hole and bolt not do the job, with less chance of the two different metals cracking the weld?

I'm shooting for a complete bolt on bracket as opposed to having it welded. To early to tell if that is possible though.

I think I put the basic info to answer your question in reply nr.8 on the previous page :)

you mention in your previous thread to use the "original bracket," but you do not specify if the "original" bracket is the one from your car or if it is the bracket from the donor brakes.

Kindly confirm as I am trying to understand.

Great job by the way!!!
