Martijn_B
Hiya! I'd like to use this thread to post the progress of the motor build for my Volvo 850 T-5R sedan. The current engine has around 250k miles on her and it's time to give her a new heart. As a basis I have purchased a B5234T6 engine from a 1998 V70R AWD with 70k miles on it. The goal is to run the engine with a K-24 to begin with, but later on upgrade to a GT3071 or T3/04E 50 trim. Goal is to have around 380+ bhp by the end of 2012. So it starts off with this: And bought this: The workshop will be my very tiny shed (1.50m wide, 3m long): Bought thicker rods from CXRacing(using ARP bolts) Installed a data logging system (Innovate LC-1 and LMA-2): Then today I started with taking the block apart in order to install the thicker rods. I found out that the rod bearings for cyl. 2 and 3 arent what they should have been... Crankshaft looks to be fine: What I need your opinion on is the cilinder walls. They do not have any scratches and the crosshatches are visible in every cylinder, but cylinder 2 and 3 have some "shiny spots": Strange vertical pattern: Getting the block honed and installing new piston rings wasnt exactly why I paid a lot of money for a low mileage block.. Whats your advice?
gmsgltr
Awesome! Do you plan to have the 380bhp with the k24 or the gt3071?
Martijn_B
I plan to hit that with a larger turbo, being realistic I think that the K-24 can hit around 340-350 bhp on these B5234T6 engines.
JasonC
Cool car, love that color. Very sleeperish compared to the more common t-5r colors. Just curious, you have a 5 cyl. block torn apart in your pics, and you have 6 new connecting rods?!?!
Martijn_B
Yeah true, mistake from CXRacing as I ordered 5 but got 6!
dublin14
Just put the 3071R in now. It makes now difference other than its done and you dont have to go in again later when the motor is in the car.
gmsgltr
i think it so funny they have sent some people 6 rods... would be a great idea to buy 5 sets and have a 6th set for the already great price of
Martijn_B
Well that all depends on the status of the cylinder walls... can only spend my money once! I think that im going to have them checked by a machine shop tomorow.
volvos60t5x
take the block to a machine shop and let them see if there any thing wrong with the patter, the crosshatch looks almost the same than mine after 140k miles.
850wagonT5
Very nice! You and I have the exact same target power-wise (380bhp). And we're both swapping in newer engines. With 70k miles, I'm certain the hard parts are in excellent shape. Most of these guys on here crack open 200k mile blocks to find they're super clean with little wear to speak of. The block I'm working with is a 2006 w/ 100k. My route includes cams, once I can find a way to pay for them. Haha! Looking forward to the progress! lookforjoe
I would expect some machine work will be needed. Once they check the tops of the bores for out-of-round, you'll know what to do next. Most of these guys on here crack open 200k mile blocks to find they're super clean with little wear to speak of. I don't think so. Any motor with 200K is gonna need a rebore, OS pistons, etc. even though they 'look' super clean, as you put it.

I saw an 850T with 298k on the clock with compression still above minimum spec...and the '98 block I just tore apart (160k) measures out fine and the bores look great. Maybe a deglazing, but it certainly doesn't need machine work. Stranger things have happened. "Could use" and "needs" are two different things, but by the number of 150k+ mile 17+ psi cars on here, I'd say "need" isn't the right word. prasamin
from that vertical pattern you've pictured, it looks like atleast some honing is needed.....take it to a machine shop to check specs, but at the minimum some honing, but you might be better off with boring and going a bit OS
Volvo5.0
Definitely have the machinist take a look. Hopefully the marking in the pictures will come out by just honing. If so, with 70k on that motor, I probably wouldn't bore it. When you consider how tight the piston running clearance is when these motors are new (.0004"-.0012"), a little wear in the cylinders may not be a bad thing. I've seen specs for performance turbo applications saying that .0025"-.0035" is OK.
Martijn_B
Thanks Guys. I dropped the block off to be measured today at a local revision specialist. Hopefully it's just honing and new piston rings, do they come in different sizes?
