Dan A
Plastidipped the hood today. Tons of chips on the hood and not ready to do a respray yet. Tried rattle can at first but it came out terrible. Went ahead and bought a Wagner sprayer. igured I can use the sprayer for other projects around the house too. Used 3 of the 14.5oz plastidip cans because finding gallons of the stuff is pretty hard, except online. Diluted 1:1 with naptha and went to town. Pics to follow. Dan A
Some of the chips. Rust coming through on some. Sanded and primered First attempt with spray cans. Ugh. No way I could do this without striping. With the Wagner. Some faint lines still but waaay better and seem to get even more even as it dries more. Instead of buying the pre-thinned gallon of plastidip at dipyourcar for about $70, I bought three 14.5oz cans at the the local hardware store for about $7 a piece and a gallon of Naptha at $15. Diluted 1:1 for the sprayer. So when thinned, it made about 1 1/2 qts which is enough for a hood. I ended up taking the hood off this time as well for the final coat, which was also helpful for more even spraying. I've got clear coat fade on the roof and will probably do that next when I get a chance.

B Mac
Cheaper than vinyl? Looks awesome and it should hold up to chips much better than normal paint.
Dan A
Thanks. There is definitely a texture to it, but I like how it turned out overall. I grabbed a couple of spare side mirrors from the parts bin and sprayed those too. I think the mirrors and the roof will be enough for me. I do wonder how easy it will be to keep clean. And it's really fun to peel off!

Stormtrooper1
Looks Great! and if you do the mirrors and roof it will really tie it all together.

sjmcarz
Did you need to sand and/or fill every scratch/chip first or did the Plastidip fill in smoothly?

Dan A
Did you need to sand and/or fill every scratch/chip first or did the Plastidip fill in smoothly? It lays on pretty thick so I think it would have covered pretty well anyway. But I just wanted to sand the minor rust spots down just to head things off. After peeling off the first attempt, I can say that the plastidip adheres a bit more to the primer but it's not really a problem to peel. Trevor, you should stop by once the roof is done.
