lookforjoe
That sucks. Looks like you'll need to buy at least the ten intake valves, those go first. With the cams, they are numbered on the ends. Check that the numbers match for I, E in their current location. Tightmopedman9
Should I just go OEM for valves? Could I convert to the 6mm stems or would I have to change more components? Edited December 18, 2012 by Tightmopedman9
Commander Riker
I think it's a little early to talk about replacing things until you know for sure that they are in fact the issue. In the video you posted, it does sound like there is no compression... however if I read this thread correctly, you haven't fired the car since the swap? I'm not sure the starter could bend valves, but perhaps someone else validate my or dismiss my thoughts there. I would retime it and try again. Volvo5.0
Should I just go OEM for valves? Could I convert to the 6mm stems or would I have to change more components? The switch from 7mm to 6mm valve stems happened around '99 - '00 so your motor should already have the 6mm valves. OEM valves are very pricey and hopefully, IF it's bent valves, it's the intakes that are bent. The exhaust valves were twice as much as the intakes (like $60 a piece) last time I checked Korruption is right, double check EVERYTHING before pulling the head. Tightmopedman9
All the valves are bent. FML. I borrowed a boroscope and checked the #2 piston, just because it was the lowest. It had four definite spots of valve markings. Looks like I have two options, pull the valve cover and replace all the valves. Or, pull the head and slap a new one on. Looking at Tasca it would cost ~900 to replace all the valves. Is there a cheaper place for valves? Looking at car-part.com I can get a head for ~200, but then I would need a new head gasket($55) and head bolts ($60) and would need to rent a cam locking tool again ($50). Replacing the head would be way more of a PITA , but then again removing every valve would suck too. Any opinions? EDIT Looking on Ebay I can get a complete Osvat valve set for $190. Should I do it? boxpin
Sorry man, that sucks. Was it that clicking sound you posted some time back?
volvoguy23
How exactly would you replace the valves by just taking the cover off?? If I were you I would just get another head and get rid of the vvt.

You can't just remove the "valve cover" to replace all the valves. The head has to come off.
Commander Riker
It's a toss up. If you can find a head ready to go... oddly I think that's going to be the cheaper/easier route. However, it will likely be used. Going new isn't bad, but yeah... expensive. Sorry to hear that. I'm wondering if they were bent when you got the motor. I recall you saying it turned over 'funny' from the get go, and the timing was off, wasn't it?If so, I would go after the seller for at least a partial refund. It's gonna be cheaper to buy a used head than all new valves.
Martijn_B
Shame to read this, I think a new gasket kit + bolts and used valves (thorough clean + measure wear on the stems) is your cheapest option. And if you are getting all new valves, then you can as easily consider a complete new head. Last time I checked it was €1100 here in NL. Tightmopedman9
Yeah, I'm bummed to say the least, but I'm staying positive and will get the problem fixed ASAP. It will have to go on hold for a little because I am leaving for Portland in two days, but after I get back I have 5 days off. I said earlier that I could just take off the valve cover and replace the valves, I don't know what I was smoking when I said that, but that would be impossible. I saw a head + turbo for $200. If that head checks out with my machinist I could just throw it on. However, if not I could just swap the valves. If I did that it's pretty unlikely that I'd have to resurface my current head, although the condition of the used valves is an unknown. My other option would be to go with Osvat valves for the same price. With the higher output I plan on running this engine at they probably wouldn't be the best idea. When I'm in there should I do anything else? I'm planning on sanding the marks off the pistons, but other than that? This. I recall you saying it turned over 'funny' from the get go, and the timing was off, wasn't it? If so, I would go after the seller for at least a partial refund. It's gonna be cheaper to buy a used head than all new valves. I will definitely be giving them a call. I wish I had known my roommate had a boroscope so I could have checked the cylinders before I put the engine in. Clearwater Cylinder heads sells remanned heads for $500 Does that come with valves, springs etc?
Keaton85
Comes with everything... but you could get used valves or a used head and just have your machine shop redo it. No need to lap to head unless it's way out of spec
