in the whole NSA thread, i can't remember a single person mentioning the cost to the govt. Its actually a cost to ATT, V

It's a cost to both. The service providers have to keep up their retainer on their lawyers, and pay people to provide the data when ordered.

But more importantly, HUGE amounts of tax dollars are being spent. The NSA maintains enormous data centers, a whole staff of people, and then builds all kinds of software to sift through the data. Did you really think this kind of stuff wasn't costing tax dollars? And what they have wasn't enough. They decided to expand : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utah_Data_Center Estimates are $4Billion right now for the facility and the gear, and you know how many Gov programs come in on budget. Nevermind the staffing and operational costs. Which will probably be greater than the construction.

I don't give a shit about the cost Alden. It's the violation of my rights by my government for whom it is illegal to gather data without a warrant. In the case of Target or anyone else where I purchase products or service, I expect that they're gathering that information because knowing me better is profitable to them.

What the NRA is doing is no different from any other PAC. They gather mailing lists in order to reach out to those people who are likely supporters of their cause. That's by no means the same thing as surreptitiously collecting my phone records and my emails.

I guess it looks like I'm overstressing the point of cost. My earlier points are also important : "to collect data about it's own people to use against them. (..) It is not the role of the government. " And by that I meant that the people do not think their government should be doing this because for a number of reasons, rights included, and because people fear the collateral damage associated with this as innocent people start looking like terrorists for saying the wrong words in an email.

Innocent look like terrorists for many reasons. Consider this poor Indian (Hindu) who experienced an enormous turmoil due to pulling his sheets of a mattress he had sprayed insecticide on before departing to catch a plane in NY.

I just hope the NSA likes hearing about how my butt itches, or how my farts smell. :-)

I think it's purely naïve to believe we aren't being spied on all the time. I try not to let it bother me, as there are more important things in life... since it's short, I'll worry about those instead. :-)

Is it an AWB there? I thought all guns were banned.

Nope, the HG ban has been gone for a while. And actually, with the new CCW law that past, they pretty much abolished the mag limit pre-emption for cook (Chicago) county, and a couple other home rule counties. So, in terms of concealed carry, you don't have a large amount to worry about any more. But they do still have an AWB. They also abolished the CFP (Chicago Firearms Permit), it's about time, because if you live in Cook county, you had to have a CFP card and a FOID card, and for CCW you would need a CCL card as well. Absolutely ridiculous.

There have been some interesting developments in Chicago regarding guns.

But we all know, all those thug gang bangers will be getting their CCL's at 150 a pop + 16 hours of training. (Although, they only need 8 hours, if they took the hunters safety course... people hunting that is.) Chicago, and effectively, this state are doomed.

You can rent / borrow a handgun in the hood. There's a whole network within the gangs. It's actually pretty difficult to pick up a gun on the black market in Chicago if you're not connected.

The reality Chris is that the killing spree in Chicago has slowed down this Summer vs. what it was last year.

Another reality is the number of hot days, have been less. And Chicago crime always picks up when the weather is nice. It was also nicer, earlier last year.

True. Hot days (90s) lead to hotter tempers probably because the heat drives everyone out of their non AC apartments on the Southside. There was that one hot spell in early Spring when the violence exploded this year.
