ryan850-t5
Will it work? Is it an upgrade?
wizzard_al
It will work, but the main difference is the VVT on the exhaust cam in head, which the '97 doesn't have, so you have to worry about stopping the VVT from flopping the cam around, and the gas lines won't fit over the top of the head without modifying the top cover. ryan850-t5
would it be an upgrade over the stock head?
wizzard_al
Supposedly, the later heads, starting in '99, were solid lifter, and most people think they flow better than a ported head from a '98 and earlier. Fishey says we are all wrong, and I haven't bothered to take a sample of each head to my machinist to get his opinion. He works on drag engines, and says the '01 head I left with him has exhaust ports that are the wrong shape, too sharp a curve, but it can be alleviated a bit with some porting. Still supposed to be better than earlier heads.
98glt-5
Don't have to worry about the cam flopping around if you leave the solenoids in place. the oil pressure will hold the cams where they are supposed to be.(assuming you do the timing procedure right for VVT)
Jardim
does it lock in a position where you would get the most performance?
98glt-5
No, they stay wherever you put them, which if you follow the VVT timing procedure will be the Volvo TDC marks.. You could always advance or retard the cams a few degrees depending on what you were trying to get out of the car. But they stay where you put them. ryan850-t5
do the cams have to be drilled out like in 01+ engines?
FINN
Yes you will drill them.
