maximumbuckeye
Hey guys, I'm doing a project for one of my engineering clases on power steering options and I'd like to get a polling of what you guys prefer. If you have any opinions on the matter, please comment as well. I appreciate it, Max
5cyl
There are plenty of people that vote hydraulic because of the "feel", however all the electrics ive driven i have preferred over the hydraulic. Also electric does not leak, require a pump, or fluid. the ease and speed you can steer with electric imo, is much better. whats up mechanical engineers!! 3rd year myself. adamdrives
Neither. I'll take no hydraulic-assist if the car is light enough.
5cyl
Neither. I'll take no hydraulic-assist if the car is light enough. thats the truth. my friends spec 89 civic SI is manual rack and its boss
Kraske
Never driven a car with electric PS, so I'm no help there. Neither. I'll take no hydraulic-assist if the car is light enough. It has less to do with weight, more to do with scrub radius. Though a lighter car helps
Che'_Moderator
Hydraulic is way better suited to the duty cycle of a power assist. Look at the MTBF on electric PS.
Kevin.
Electronic power steering is butter compared to anything else IMO
Fishey
Hydraulic has better feel but electric overall would be my choice just from a power loss/efficiency standpoint. The new systems are very good indeed.
Mesoam
Electric steering is fantastic for the general population, aka people who don't care about cars and think a numb car defines luxury.
adamdrives
Car and Driver, or some such, did a test last year on two 6 series beemers, one with hydraulic, one with electrical, might have been blind test. Both came up very close, electric might have even gotten better ratings for feel, while hydraulic was said to feel more on center, etc. Sure most econoboxes don't get the bmw treatment, but it does suggest that they can make a good electrical rack. Can you elaborate Chuck?
RZT5
I've only driven one car with an electric rack (09 TSX), and I drive it every day. I like the steering feel of the electric more than EVERY hydraulic rack I've ever driven. Of course comparing an 09 TSX to a bunch of Volvos and a few other european cars is like comparing apples to oranges, so I wouldn't consider my observations conclusive evidence by any means. mopar318
I prefer the steering feel of my 2005 S40 over my 850.Although the s40 uses a electric driven hydraulic pump, not full electric assist.
pedro fandango
i'm using a Citroen Saxo electric pump, mounted in the boot on my 854 T-5. Purely to remove from the engine & give me flexibility to put it where i want
Piston Slapper
You ran your power steering lines all the way back to the trunk? Wow... that's... odd.
