erikv11
This is like $40 and I've never used it, but apparently they are very reliable. Or ask Adam which one he bought, maybe it was from Napa. http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/buy/products/10141-combustion-leak-detector-by-lisle-part-lis75500-commercial-tools-equipment.html http://www.amazon.com/UVIEW-560000-Combustion-Leak-Tester/dp/B000NPDL76
adamdrives
Do you have a small crack along the seam of your expansion tank? Get it hot and check it out. If the system can't pressurize it could explain some of your symptoms.
prasamin
http://www.harborfreight.com/cylinder-leak-down-tester-94190.html I was looking at something like the above....so now i'm confused because what you linked to is completely different, Erik Adam, what did you use? Other Adam, I'll check it out, but if there was a crack, i'd see coolant or atleast some vapor coming out, which I didn't see for the 30 minutes it was idling or when I was revving it, although the cap was off.....after putting the cap back on and turning the car off, i could hear a constant hissing from under the cap for about 15 minutes.... there was still pressure in the system after parking the car over night for 10 hours.....that's really weird because I don't remember ever having pressure in the system after the car has sat for that long.... Oreo931
Pras, I am not talking about a cylinder leak down test. I am talking about a combustion leak test. Essentially, the tester "sniffs" the coolant vapor, and if exhaust is detected, it will turn the fluid from blue to yellow. The kit erik linked to is correct. (see link below) http://www.amazon.com/UVIEW-560000-Combustion-Leak-Tester/dp/B000NPDL76/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1362143637&sr=1-1&keywords=combustion+leak+tester Keep in mind the test is not 100% fool proof. I've had this happen to me twice (same symptoms you're describing). The first time it was on a replacement motor, which unbeknownst to me had the headgasket replaced prior with an aftermarket part. On that motor the test confirmed a bad HG. I had that motor rebuilt, and recently again ( ) after driving 2 miles with no coolant. (Read thread I linked above for more details). The second time around the leak was not big enough for the test to confirm the HG. It was confirmed only after taking apart the motor. I think it's normal to have SOME pressure in the cooling system after the car has been sitting for 10 hours. Also, when I had this problem, coolant came out when I was driving, it never came out after I parked the car.
phunktified
I think it's normal to have SOME pressure in the cooling system after the car has been sitting for 10 hours. perhaps.. for reference my 850 w/ HG issue would hold pressure forever until I released the cap.. then pshhhhhhhhhhh.. whereas my v70 never seems to have any pressure after sitting overnight .. prasamin
anyone know if a leaky water pump would cause this pressure issue, or the issue of having coolant spew out of 2 different spots at the same time after the car is parked? I'm not understanding the correlation between a leaky or defective water pump and over-pressure in the system. there is clearly some kind of leak at the water pump, though I see no signs of coolant ever having come out of that top little weep hole. If your pump is OEM then I highly doubt it's defective. There have been issues with aftermarket pumps and impellers breaking off... My guess is that you have coolant coming out of your expansion tank and dripping into your timing cover through the connection point at the top of the cover. When I had this problem I dried coolant on the outside of my timing cover.
prasamin
Yeah, all my stuff is original volvo but, if you see the pictures, something has splattered on the INSIDE of the timing cover.....i removed it, and immediately saw that something had splattered there....seems more like oil with a bit of coolant. and, at the bottom of the INSIDE of the timing component housing, there is a puddle of coolant. I tried to see how it was possible for it to get in there, but I see no way for it to go from the expansion tank to where i see it inside the timing cover maybe the seal is gone, or bolts not tightened enough...no idea....but there is oil there too, which is not good either. adamdrives
I had an aftermarket waterpump go bad in a parking lot while I was idling after a 10 mile drive and it made coolant pour out of the bottom of the expansion tank, and put a lot of pressure in the tank itself. The only reason for this I can imagine is coolant is not reaching the rad, just cooking in the block/etc. and getting way too hot = overpressure finds a weak spot. When we took the pump out the impeller was plastic (aftermarket, i bought the car used with no history) and it had broken. It might be worth it as this point to take the water pump off and check it out. Not sure if you know when it was last replaced. Good luck, hope this helps. prasamin
Thanks Adam...it's original Volvo and it was replaced during the engine build....in fact every single sensor and mechanical part was replaced with genuine Volvo, along with gaskets and seals.... I just went to the dealer where a friend works. All the mechanics took a look and really didn't find any issue. This issue arose at the time the lower boost hose blew off, so they are saying that it very well could be related. No bubbles, no coolant smell, smooth flow of coolant, and the coolant that was at the bottom of the tbelt cover is actually from the tank coolant spray i suppose. We even took it for a very aggressive drive, and zero pressure issue and zero coolant leakage or spewing. Maybe I just freaked myself out, but the car runs exceptionally well....I went ahead and got a new thermostat and coolant cap from the dealer and i'll replace those just for the sake of doing it and ruling them out in case another issue arises. I have a feeling the boost hose coming off at high pressure might have had something to do with the excess pressure. I don't know how, but maybe someone else can come up with a connection...
