This topic always brings up a lot of different opinions.

Personally, I fucking despise them. There's a difference between loud and obnoxiously loud. A stock bike of almost any make typically isn't very loud, it's the dickbags that buy them that make it that way. Around here it's unevenly divided into two groups.

1. The logo bikers/weekend warrior Harley riders. Usually the guy that's a pussy in real life but plays dressup and has a HD logo on every piece of riding gear. Likely wears Khakis during the week.

2. Sportbike crowd. Not as many as the Harley group and not nearly as loud unless they putz around at 12k rpm. Most of them aren't loud, just a few.

I had a bike a long time ago and just bought another, personally I don't buy into the "loud pipes save lives" bullshit. Fact of the matter is you're on a bike and don't stick out as much as a car. You gotta act like they don't see you.

The only reason I posted this is because there was some jackass outside of the post office sitting there just revving the shit out of his bike, in the snow.

I used to not care..then one day I was in the middle getting a ticket for loud exhaust on my old RX7 when a group of fucking Harleys drove by...I asked the cops why they don't get tickets and I do since they are obviously louder than me..He asked me if I wanted to go to jail that night or if I just wanted to play ball and sign for the ticket

I haven't ridden a street bike, trying to stick to off road for safety, but if I got one you bet it'd have a full exhaust system.

I don't see anything wrong with it, its the same thing as putting OBX on our Volvos it just makes it more fun.

I initially wanted to just say broadly Yes, but after thinking about it, I guess I only really hate cruiser VTwins. I think part of this is that they seem naturally louder, especially in the low end. And many of these guys run truly straight pipes, while the sport bikes have a very minimal muffler. It doesn't do much, but it does something.

And I think the biggest issue with the crazy loud sport bikes is the dick head operating it. If one cruises by me walking down the sidewalk mid-conversation at 4k rpm, I barely notice it. If the asshole is holding gears, and cruising at 8k rpm, then it becomes a problem.

I don't buy the "loud pipes save lives" argument. I think if anything, it causes the general public to hate bikers, and want to restrict their freedoms. You can hammer it with straight pipes out in the woods all day as long as you keep it quiet on mainstreet.

They get a free pass even though they're blatantly snubbing any type of noise laws. I still don't understand why it's become so acceptable. They'll tag cars all day long but won't stop a bike for the same thing.

The noise isn't the same. You'd have to try real hard to touch their level of noise and you still wouldn't be in the same territory.

That's the thing with these guys. Keep it out of town.

When my oldest was a baby and teething he hadn't slept forever and was pissed. I finally got him to sleep and some dickhead comes through our super-quiet neighborhood blipping the shit out of his throttle. Ruined that nap, thanks asshole. It's inconsiderate to think that you can drive through a populated area and really think that people want to hear that. Just because your toothless girlfriend thinks it's tits, most people don't.

If you want to play dressup more power to you and I hope you have fun, but keep the noise down.

Very interesting reading opinions outside Cali. Most people I know here in ca like loud bikes. I hate it when those silent fuckers sneak up on me in traffic splitting lanes. I would much rather know someone is coming audibly so I know not to change lanes

Short answer: yes.

My place is peaceful as all can be, secluded.. the lot is raised up from the road with a nice view of a field down to a river, etc.. . but I live right on a corner and my road is also a popular biker route in the summer time ... theres a stop sign right by my house they love to sit at and rev the stupid things like its going out of style .. :arob:

so freaking annoying on a saturday or sunday ...

I live a few hundred yards from Hwy 1. There is a bridge that passes over the property and all the sounds echo down the canyon. There is also a passing lane right after the bridge, so everyone is always stepping on it. I hear it all, all day long, it is the most annoying thing ever. The Harleys don't even have to be going fast and they make a bunch of racket, and than all the crotch rockets passing in the passing lane. It is funny sometimes though. You see some hard ass looking guy riding his Visa Harley, and as he crosses the bridge you hear his radio, blasting some Cher or something of that sort. I have been getting use to the noises, but every once in a while you hear someone rev it up while going across the bridge, and all i want to do is throw a pipe in their wheels.

There is a huge difference between the sound of a V-twin motor and a in line 4 on a sport or touring bike(goldwing).

My ZX-12 has a fully muzzy kit on it and its loud as fuck but only when I get on it and usually anywhere above 8k. The H2 on the other hand is a 2-stroke and is always loud but not uncomfortable/setting off car alarms loud.

my neighbor has a road king with drag pipes on it... when ever he starts is bike he sets off my alarm and the chick next doors alarm from across the street.

All my bikes have after market pipes on them but it was done for performance not for sound.

Most v-twin riders and crusier riders put pipes on just for the sound, not for performance... I see it on a daily basis, the pipes are blue'd or gold cause they dropped the pipes on with out a jet kit or power commander so the bike is running lean as shit. thats where the back firing comes from too...

Just put it this way... if im coming home from a ride in the middle of the day, One im not hauling ass through my neighbor hood, two most of the time im at a low enough rpm that its not a bother. But at night knowing that 3 of my neighbors have kids, and 3 of them are old and like to complain about everything... I speed up at the corner (the main road) and kill the motor coasting down the street to be considerate.

But on the highway its more effective than a horn.. when someone starts drifting into your lane, pull that clutch and crack it open... it gets their attention real quick.

I fucking hate loud bikes. Seeing as how there's a Harley dealership every 15 feet and a bike night every single day of the week, summer in Milwaukee is one constant loud Harley Davidson blaring in your ear. As much as they annoy me, crotch rockets bother me even more since 99% of the people driving them are complete and utter tools.

Then you've never heard a loud Harley. Our exhausts don't even begin to compare to theirs. ;) My car going past you when you're walking down the street won't make your ears ring or set off car alarms, a Harley will.
