rmorse
Sup sup! So, I installed my IPD track sways a couple weeks ago on my 96 855R. I've been hearing a clunking noise in the rear, and finally crawled under to look. My buddy who did the alignment told me that the rear sway was close to the (stock) exhaust....well, that was an understatement lol. I don't think it's actually touching, but it's like half a mm away. I'm pretty positive that that's what's causing my rear clunk, because I didn't have one before. Anyway, I want to replace my exhaust with an OBX so I'm not too worried about it. I do, however, want to make sure that it isn't installed incorrectly or anything. Is this normal that it's that close to the muffler?Oh yea, I guess I should add that I have IPD blue springs and koni yellows.

troyhyde
The blue rear sway? Sounds a little close but in the realm of normal.. The only thing that changes the pitch of the exhaust components would be the condition of the hydraulic mounts. If yours have sagged where the bump stop hits the subframe (above the transmission), the exhaust will be a little funky. I've got that bar on a couple of cars and I have about 1/2" of clearance to the bar. The stocker has a kink where the muffler is, now you know why..... To my knowledge, mounts have never been changed.
icerockt
My older black IPD rear sway hit the stock muffler and was wedged against the OBX. I had to get both shortened to avoid vibrations and clunks. (This is on the 94 855 T5m)
caanglin
My 25mm ipd rear bar clears a 3" exhaust and also cleared the OBX exhaust.
atefitty
Take a crow bar to that suitcase..
JVC
Check your exhaust hangers. One might be torn. And then just take a hammer to the suitcase and clearance it.
marco bolduc
Are you sure your car is "straight"/ was not involved in a major accident!? You had problems with the front sways hitting your control arm, now your rear sway hitting the muffler! Seems really weird!
Brad850
My ipd rear hits my custom exhaust. For now I just put the old bushing from my brothers front sway on the ipd sway. The rear view mirror vibrates a little in drive lol. Doesn't make contact in park or neutral. Gonna hammer it out when I have the time.

BurgerBob
I was talking to Two-Turtles about this, and we agreed that - aside from the fact that this further proves just how shitty Volvos are - you should look into a muffler delete. Mufflers are just so prone to problems. If anything, try and find a way to manually muffle the engine. Maybe route the exhaust so that you can use your spare hand as a muffler?
