Have steady income now so it's time for something big this winter break. I currently have a stage 0'd 850r with a blue tune, 18t, r mani, ard pulley, msd, all along with the appropriate gauges. Na cams and aquamist will be done this summer, along with ipd springs and complete suspension refresh that is waiting to go in.

So here are my options

A. H-beams... Which I guess might end up being a hone, new rings, head-gasket, head-bolts, cam seals, sealant, intake gasket, and anything else I didn't list due to a lack of research. Possibly a timing belt kit while it's out.

B. M56h

I'm confident in doing both my self barring the hone. Did my rms and had to remove the intermediate block to get machined so I have a decent knowledge of how things go together. Betting most of you will say manual, although I'm leaning towards rods due to the fact that I really like the idea of a slightly larger turbo with an aggressive tune and no worries of engine carnage. Or just being able to stomp on my 18t. Then again, my auto may not be able to handle much more than 300whp.

I'm more or less searching for any good reasons against option A that I'm not seeing, not just "manual is fun". I don't have enough money to do both right away, so I'm worried about any unforeseen issues/expenses with option A. What do you ladies think?

Honestly, if you plan to build the engine up and do a manual swap at some point, I'd first do the manual swap and have a fully stage 0 manual trans 850R, then move on to building it up. That way you have just about everything done and out of the way to start a full on build.

That and with the 18T, I'm sure the time in between the manual swap and engine build will be much more enjoyable with the manual trans.

Personally I'd rather drive a stock T5m then even a 300whp auto. And wouldn't an engine rebuild cost a lot more than the manual swap?

Either way this is just IMO, but I wouldn't screw with the engine, just manual swap it and enjoy and if it ever blows up I'd get a RN motor and just keep that stock internals too.

C'mon now, Greg. I don't even think you have rods in your car

Brad, if you manual swap it I will help you find all of the parts and help you put the transmission in. My wife is deploying in October and I am going to need stuff to do

I would manual swap, simply because I wouldn't want to do all the con-rod work just to feel like it did before I put them in.

For me, rod swap only on the list if I have further big mods after it.

or something like that. Fun either way.

Make sure to have a manual tune ready for the car to drop in to really enjoy it

Internal vs external slave, since I have used both I would recommend internal since the newer transmissions use them. I would try to find a transmission out of a 99 or newer C70 since those are the HKs and have the solid shifter forks. Were you looking into doing a LSD while you were doing this?

As for the tan shifter, I can lookup the part number and talk to Greg to see if we can find another one. Worst comes to worst, we could buy a black one and have it dyed or just get a T-5R wood shift knob

nope no rods in my car - but if i could do it again i would do even more than what i did all at once haha

i did the quaife lsd during my manual swap and i havent really put it through the races yet but have noticed it here and there

tan 850 r manual knob - you wont find one unless its used from europe or new old stock but volvo is sold out and cj sold me his last one for the price of a few t5r knobs lol

the t5r knob is awesome but wont match your tan/yellowish r trim - wouldnt be too hard though to grab the charcoal trim

personally i would rather have the t5r knob - it doesnt get dirty haha and cleans easy (find me the charcoal R trim and i will sell you the tan r knob!)

Hmmm is the charcoal trim same as the black interior R's? Bet I would have an easier time finding that than the shift knob. Is that a serious offer Greg?

And Kev maybe I could send it to those redline people to get reupholstered in tan. Most likely won't be doing lsd. Don't have an extra 1000. Will probably do that when I have the money to get a real turbo. Unless I can get one for relatively cheap. I'm gonna send you a pm later today. I just saw you sent me one yesterday.
