floggingmike
My friend is looking for a car, he found this. http://delaware.craigslist.org/cto/3913947339.html Its a 1991 740 auto. Pretty sure its a base model. I spend most of my time in the realm of P80 Volvos so I'm not very well versed in this era of models. Is there anything serious that he should look out for? I understand this car isn't exactly minty but if it runs and whatnot, he's happy with it. I know the auto transmissions for the p80s arent great and there are key things to look for. Anything like that for the 740s? thanks for any/all replies
D s50r
look for rot around where the front control arms bolt to the body... ive seen a few rot out around there in the north east, fuel leaks at the sending unit, not to familiar with them but thats the two big things ive came across working at the dealership
okoye
Make sure it's not regina you wont have fun modding that! Go with anything that has a bosch system.
floggingmike
Apparently he's gonna look at this one too (i prefer the post-facelift but hey, not my car ) http://southjersey.craigslist.org/cto/3903802637.html Im sure the '91 NA is a better route to go as opposed to this '87 turbo. Same things to look for with both? And yeah I figured the Bosch system would be preferable. It'll probably sit in his driveway and he'll slowly throw money at it to get it to where it needs to be. Which one would be the better choice and why?
crispinds
Just some research "1987... I think that was the first gen B230, which isn't the best of all of them." "1987 was still a good year for the B230. 88 is when they perfected the Bosch fuel system but 87 is more tuneable. If you want one you hardly have tofix you get an 88-92 but if you want to mod it 87s are tough to beat."
floggingmike
Just found out that the 87 has been sitting since which 2002........lol. Told him to stay away and check out the 91. Also think theres a better car to get for his budget. (ideally a p80 so i can actually know what im talking about)
okoye
have him get the 87. better than driving an N/A most likely regina car. doesn't take much to get those cars running in tip top shape!
bassguy
The '87 would be Bosch LH 2.2. The '91, the speedometer is a known issue. You'll have to do some research, figure out what fuel system it is, but I have heard of people turbocharging Regina/REX cars before.
