FrankenMoose
Ladies and Gentlemen, this just in... My V70R will be resurrected! Thanks to the work of Steve; and a place to do the work, thanks to Phil. I'm planning to purchase a 2.4L LPT from a 2002+ S60 and do a full rebuild prior to stuffing it in the car. Also, looking into a possible manual M66C swap while the engine is out. I'm starting this thread to document the process. Here's what started it: Was driving home and started to hear loud lifter knock. About a mile of two later when the tranny downshifted to climb a hill, all hell broke loose. It sounded like someone threw a wrench in the works; total loss of power; no response to throttle; then it seized. The puddle of coolant and oil it left, and what looks like a part of the block were left on the ground under the car when it was moved to load on the flatbed. More to follow as it progresses. Off to local dealer to confirm seizure. Leaving dealer after confirmed seizure of engine and on its way to Phil's house for the work. Gonna be here for a bit... sjmcarz
If you do go the 2002 + LPT route, welcome to the club! Last year my son and I put a 2002 S60 LPT in his '00 R, fairly easy swap. BTW, I love the stance on yours, looks great!

Currently looking at an 02+ LPT, but also looking at a 2005 S60R engine complete with a M66C Tranny. Either way, I'm going to have lots of questions lol. Started teardown today

sjmcarz
A HPT 2.4 (S60 T5, 2004-09?)would be a good choice also, but very rare.
FrankenMoose
Looking at a '04 S60R and M66C combo purchase. Anyone want to weigh in on the parts I'll need from the donor car? ECU, wiring harness, cables, etc?

FrankenMoose
OK, after several days drunk on the "MOAR POWWA" kool-aid, I have come to my senses. Turns out, after talking to several people about possibly swapping in a B5254T4 (06 S60R) engine with a AWF21 (6Speed Auto); the conclusion is: It's not impossible, just impractical. It would take way more time and money to do than I could ever justify. But... man that kool-aid tasted schweet. Anyway, Here are the two engines options that WILL work in my chassis with minimum to moderate modification. Both will also work with an M66C 6speed manual conversion: 2.4T LPT (B5244T3) 2.3T T5 (B5234T3) The LPT is the lower published Horsepower option, but the lower end is built stronger, and it has half a notch more compression ratio than the HPT. And, it comes with Lucky's suggestion as the one to get. The T5 has the higher published Horsepower, and has thicker cylinder walls. The thicker walls and higher starting Horsepower make it a definite contender. If I plan to upgrade the Rods, does it matter if the lower end is stronger to start? As too which engine can be built up for higher output, that is open for debate. I plan to outfit the new block with new R manifolds, My recently rebuilt (seriously, like less than 2000 miles on it) 19T; and if it's not to damaged, my old blocks head. Now all that's left is to find a block and trans. Hussien, I'm going to be looking at you for an M66C Trans bracket...
Mike_Driver
I don't know if you have driven many LPT cars but they are really quick off the line where as the T5's seem to be a little more sluggish comparatively. We have an 06 2.5T FWD S60 loaner car that love to smoke tires and pull hard off the line, quicker than my T-5R, but it lags a little on the top end. It really comes down to where you want the most power, off the line or down the line. I am not really a speed junky I am more of an acceleration junky and like blowing the doors off ricers while they are "waiting for VTECH".
FrankenMoose
Hmmm... by lags a bit on the top end, what are we talkin here? Like if I'm doing 50 and go WOT, it's got nuthin to give? Or, does it just take forever getting to 80 (my comfort speed)? Off the line performance will be great for autocross... since you rarely go above 3rd gear.
sjmcarz
As the owner (son's wheels-floggingmike) of a 2000R 2.4 LPT 19T, I like the low end and love the mid-range torque, even higher up it feels good, maybe tapering off some as it closes in on redline.. Still has the stock tune, so 1st and 2nd gear are limited torque. Would probably feel awesome with a tune and the limiter removed, but want to preserve the new trans. At 50 MPH WOT, it kicks down and feels strong, no issues there. I believe you stated that you have the blue tune in your car, you can have Lucky tweak it for the LPT if needed and be good.
