If its mandatory you won't have the suppression that's prevalent now

What suppression? I'm asking because while I'm aware of some isolated incidents, I'm not sure many would agree with such a broad statement the way you phrased it.

Why couldn't we still have that same suppression? After it's mandatory, we can make sure you need your National ID card to vote, and keep the same number of poling locations/staffing/parking despite the double/triple turn out.

we should all have the day off and just party all day

I plan on being baked all day. My party has already started.

I'm not sure you understand how rights work. Just as a right can be exercised, it can be waived. That's the whole point of protecting individual's freedom to choose. By making it a compulsory vote, it's no longer a right.

Maybe compromise between the two in that if you voted and have proof (generate some kind of receipt or something when you vote), it's a valid excuse to take the day off.

You get a tax credit for showing up and voting.    If you don't want a credit, then so be it. Would work.

I like that a lot in theory, but kinda curious how that gets enforced. Government people or managers are going to be demanding receipts? I don't like that part of it.

I already said I was aware of isolated incidents. In fact, I knew of one that happened in MA. Bill Clinton showed up in New Bedford during the primaries, with entourage/motorcade and allegedly caused a clusterfuck making it hard for people to get to the voting location.

But you didn't address the more important issue: How does mandatory voting improve any of that? It will only make it worse. People aren't going to bother because there's a 10hr line. And what are you going to do to those people who refused to stand around for a long time? Punish them?

Why isn't all states offer ballot by mail.

I been voting for both local and presidential election via ballot by mail since college.  Never had to step into any voting booth or know what it is look like.

Privatizing voting will clean that up and they can get the machines where they are needed

I've voted absentee the last 2 elections.  PA is one day only.

I wouldnt call state wide suppression isolated incidents either.

You're concerned with voter suppression, but not with the politics that  could come from a private company handling it?

So then you believe the govt does everything perfect and doesn't have its finger on the scale?

No way, and I'm often for privatization and smaller government. But voting does not seem like a place that should have financial interests. I don't want Blackwater or SurveyMonkey administering the voting.

Ok but now you are letting a political party decide district budgets.
