C70 Bumper Swap...r, Xc, Or Stock

So I've been putting this off, but it is something I've wanted to do for a while. After I purchased my 98 C70, my brother kept opening his VW door into my bumper, chipping the paint all over the place.....so nice of him. It didn't look that good anyway because the previous owner had the bumper sprayed over, which was a really shi**y job.

Fast forward 7 years...I think it's time, especially since my bumper was so nicely smashed on Tuesday.

My local stealership wants $700+ for a stock c70 bumper (cover only) painted in my color. My buddy that owns a autobody shop can't do any better because he gets it for the same discount that I do...and he can't get it painted in saffron for some strange reason.

Looking around online, I found some interesting alternatives to the stock c70 bumper that I think would look great. I'm not trying to cop anyone's style.

Option 1: "R" bumper. I found it for a descent price from Viva Performance. I like it both for the looks and the price. I'm not wild about the fact that this seems to be a common swap. after looking through the pics of the C70s thread.

Option 2: V70 XC "Stubby" bumper. I've only seen this done on the one C70 shown in the pic below. I've come across an S70 too. I think this looks HOT! It's different, which makes it appealing to me... Problem...stealership said it won't fit (I can't understand why)...and couldn't get a price. After looking at this C70 though...I think it looked better in my head.

Either way, I'll have to change the fog lights, which is cool. I didn't like the pitting and overspray that I couldn't get off of these anyway. BUT....What else would I have to replace??? Vents, styrofoam, brackets???

Option 3: go with a stock C70 bumper...maybe put an S40 lip

I'd love to hear what others have to say about the subject!

Option #3, by far the best looking.

The R & XC bumper's boxy appearance are much better suited to the V70 & S70 than the C70.

Get the part number for the C70 front bumper skin and check Tasca Volvo or Darrell Waltrip Volvo for prices, they're generally the cheapest options for replacement bumpers.

As much as I love the R bumper, I agree with the choice to keep the C70 bumper. It's unique to the car and imo flows best with the coupe body. I like the S40 lip in the picture above, but I wish there were other lip options that look good and fit correctly.

I was just saying it's an option, I've never seen one on a C70, who knows, might look kinda cool, add a lip to the bottom... *shrug*

Not that it matters now... but you got me interested in what that might look like. I spent an hour looking for a stock S/V bumper. No such luck finding that. Oh well.

As for the lip...maybe I can convince my father to put a lip on his 2000 V70, lol

Speaking of my father...can anyone tell me why my father's '94 855 is a beast compared to my 98 C70 HPT and comparable my brother's '95 850 T-5R. It has the same engine code as my C70 under the hood. It's not like my car is a POS...it moves (I know---I'm going off my own topic!)

Define beast.

All three have essentially the same engine (B5234T5 in the T-5R and B5234T3 in the other two). Similar turbo 16T or 15G. The T-5R has a slightly enhanced tuning over the other two. So if your dad's 855 seems more powerful than both you need to define what that means. Especially since the wagon is the heaviest of the three cars. (Wagon = 4340 lbs, T-5R = 4,250 lbs, C70 = 4,190 lbs).

They're all 15 to 20 year old cars. Maintenance and condition will have the largest impact on overall performance (acceleration probably being the primary difference you're talking about).

This. My guess would be one is closer to stage zero than the other.

Mainly acceleration, yeah. My dad's wagon is a rocket off the line. I've heard crazy things, like the 93 and 94 had different cams. And Volvo had to take it back a bit. Not that I am interested in seriously tuning my car, Just interested to know.

My C70 is in the best condition. More recently...and frequently... maintained.
