Well, VS Legend, even leaving that little bit of space at the top, the shims still create a great deal of strength in that area. There's less area susceptible to flex, which is what causes that crack to form in the first place. While you are correct that shimming to the top is stronger, having that small place for the HG to bite into is probably the lesser of two evils. It'll be less likely to blow the gasket under very high cylinder pressures.

absolutely Chrispy, and that is why I don't pressed them to the bottom, the shim gets presses by the HG bite right where it should be.

I just two pieces of stainless shimming steel and bent the ends over to stop them from slidding out.

I am sorry oblark, but that does not look properly gaped and really looks horrid...also understand that shims once in place will not be sliding anywhere.

Worry not. I didnt spend any time overthinking this. It took longer to draw that picture. We measured and said, "Well look at that". Got the correct gap needed, ground it down and pounded them in.

i understand, you did a great job just trying to show regular owner that it is extremely easy to do it right.

on my 4th block...friends 850.

total cost 8.71$ two feeler gauges...they are 3.99 each...

also if you're boring out the block, yes you can pound them...if not "press them" not pound.

It doesn`t have to look pretty it just needs to functional, who will see it when the head is fitted :)

Don't you worrie about the dust get inside the engine while you assemble it on your yard? Scary

If there was some terrible wind or something, yes. But generally where I live its calm and yesterday was a nice peaceful cloud cover and 70 deg. The engine gets bagged when not being worked on.

Any pics of the vents you added to the valve cover?

I want valve cover vents, do they have a type of baffling to keep as much oil out as possible?

Two vents (thanks Hussein) with baffles on the underside. Welded the donuts from the inside, no reason just did it that way.

Nice clutch! Is that the EZ-LOCK PRO? That the was the clutch I was looking at, but decided against for no particular reason. I have a feeling I'll be taking the transmission out again soon enough...

Thats the one. I think I got the link from your thread. The site has 20% off right now.
