mattsk8 Posted March 17, 2014 Report Share Posted March 17, 2014 I love a good system. I got big into building speakers a while back, now I do it quite a bit as a hobby. When I was a builder, I did HT installs as well. My music system consists of an Adcom 5500 amp, a B&K processor, and a Marantz SACD player. My HT system is a Yamaha RX-V1065 receiver, Panasonic BR, and JBL Northridge speakers w/ a Klipsch sub. I'm building speakers right now to replace the JBL speakers in my HT system. Speakers for my music system and a link to where you can get the kit http://meniscusaudio.com/er18mtm-ribbon-pair-p-1323.html. I've taken these to a lot of demos and they do very well. If you're looking for full range, you'll have to spend at least $5k to get better SQ. Panels cut, dado'd and rabbeted, the cherry veneer I made using my resaw and planer, and the crossover mounted to the back. Finished pics. Other speakers I've built. These are 5' tall and weigh 120 lbs each. I built them for a rec room w/ a pool table, hence the inlays. That's real copper on the front and back w/ hickory veneer I made. I should get some pics of them w/ the grills, in the rec room. Another pair I built w/ maple veneer, they look purple guessing from the flash but they're dark burgundy. I'm building my bookshelf speakers for my HT system, and I'm building the whole sound system for our church. The beginning phase of my HT speakers. First I test the woofers to find out what cabinets they like to play in, then build the cabinets and mount the speakers, then test the speakers to build crossovers. Pick of the original cabinet I made, the Labatt box was used for determining where the speakers would mount. The second pic is the speaker in front of the mic for testing. And these are the speakers I'm building for the church system. These are 6' tall. I started w/ an array of piezo tweeters, but they didn't work (sounded terrible) so I switched to one single, very efficient Eminence tweeter. These are by far and away the loudest speakers I've ever built. Once these are done, I'll build a pair of horn loaded subwoofer cabinets w/ 15" subs in them. A gfp555 and a gfp750 (favorite preamp ever) I miss most of it. Hell, I miss most of the stuff I don't have anymore.. Started on a turntable project yesterday. I'll get a few pics up later.. Highlights of my system are b&o redline 60.2 front speakers, integra htr, and oppo DVD/sacd player. The rest is Bose, polk, acoustic research. In the basement I have tall wharfdale towers next to my desk which is nice overkill when I'm working. I also like Polk, they were pretty much my favorite before I got into building speakers. I have some Polk MTM bookshelf speakers for the garage system run off an old Kenwood receiver. Mike, that looks awesome. I think I might give that a go. Knowing that I know nothing short of how to play a record, what's a good, cheap way to get into building a record player? Guessing I should look for a used player on CL? Anyone near Chicago here that plans on going to Axpona this April?? http://www.axpona.com/ I went last year and it was incredible. I've always wanted to try building my own speakers. Just terrified they will sound like shit or I'll likely have a buzzing somewhere from my suspect craftsmanship.
