aldebaran
Speaking of older Onkyo Integra amps...I have a A-9711 which drives my Magnepans. The rest of my components have been updated since this picture was taken. Computer room has a Yamaha CAVIT amp and Yamaha bookshelf speakers paired with a Denon sub.

aldebaran
I like Maggie's.. Wish I had the room for a pair! Yes, i love mine. They can reproduce acoustical instruments and vocals extremely well. Electrostatic and planar-magnetic speakers are still unrivaled in these areas. I had some apogees a while back that with proper placement were like having a second set behind you. Almost euphonious..

I get goosebumps when the music suddenly comes alive.

Electrostatic and planar-magnetic speakers are still unrivaled in these areas. I wish I had a room for Electrostatic or planar speakers as well, but I could never make them work. My only issue w/ them is as soon as you're off axis, the sound isn't as good. Phenomenal on axis (maybe the best I've heard), but off axis not so much. I have two separate systems, a planar speaker and 2-channel amp for pure musical enjoyment and another dynamic speaker system with a home theater receiver for movies and other stuff... Its an awesome system for sure, well done and very classy. My living room sucks, its an acoustical nightmare and its too small . I heard some planar speakers a couple years ago at an AXPONA show in Chicago and on axis they were among some of the best sounding speakers there. Pretty hefty price tag though, around $40k for the pair IIRC. I'll be going to this year's AXPONA show this coming weekend in Chicago again. Its a great opportunity to sit in front of $500k systems and drool. I can only take so much of that though, WAY too many female jazz tunes playing at those things. There was a point where I was contemplating jumping out of a 4th story window if I heard one more Diana Krall or Jaimee Paul song.
Dick Dastardly
I hate demo music.. It's always Dianna Krall. I want to hear MY music before I make a decision.. I love the snide HiFi world.. Where performance is directly related to money. "That $2300 CD player is great it sounds almost as good as a $3100 CD player" "Those $75k speaker cables are not worth it, they sound like $62k speaker cables" Old fucks Edited April 23, 2014 by scumcity14

Except it isn't the old guys that are the ones that buy into all the snake oil BS, its actually the younger ones that'll sit there and argue about 'skin effect' in speaker wire and idiotic crap like that. The shows are still fun, a lot of the venues will play music if you bring it. Just don't wander in w/ an ipod, you'll get written off at that point. v4lve
Built this 2 years ago out of some thrift store parts (I do this a lot) Both look great I hate demo music.. It's always Dianna Krall. I want to hear MY music before I make a decision.. I love the snide HiFi world.. Where performance is directly related to money. "That $2300 CD player is great it sounds almost as good as a $3100 CD player" "Those $75k speaker cables are not worth it, they sound like $62k speaker cables" Old fucks This, so much this. One of the best things I ever read regarding this topic was "Get Better Sound" by Jim Smith. He goes pretty far into placement, materials, etc as opposed to trying to solve an issue, that may not even exist, with gear. I don't think it lends much credibility but I PM/sell/"design" home systems so I come across a lot of random gear and have had some acquaintances with decent equip. Haven't been in the field THAT long so I try to listen more than anything else but I have developed a sense for what I like. Trying to downsize though so everything I have is for sale and I'll probably consolidate into ??? two stereos currently, Living room: Revox 791 turntable nak zx9 cassette revox modded b225 CD rotel ra1070 integrated bluesound vault airport express kef q300 bookshelves niles ssvc4 for dining, basement, and patio speakers (russound rsf64) bedroom: revox b285 receiver airport express vienna acoustics Haydn bookshelves
Dick Dastardly
Since my divorce started and I sold most of my old stuff, I've gone with the best sound on the cheap.. And I have done very well... Living room: Onkyo Integra integrated A8087 (from 1984) $10 Denon CD player (from 1991) $12 Nakamichi DC-1 Casstte (1992) $15 PSB Stratus speakers $100 I have a few turntables but the one I am using now is a Pro-Ject Debut with an Ortofon cartridge and Carbon fiber tone arm.. Bedroom: vintage Scott amp. PSB Alpha speakers And just plug my phone or laptop in.. Actually my set up hasn't cost me anything, it's technically a negative cost.. I've sold some pieces i picked up at yard sales and second hand stores for a large profit.. In the end I think it "cost" me negative $650 or so..
