It can be a lot of snake oil like you said and people sometime hear what they spend and it makes them happy. Some of my exposure to this realm makes me seem that the people who do spend on cabling do so reluctantly because they acknowledge the former. Or on the other side of the spectrum - to show off and dick measure. I did recently add a giant power conditioner to a system and it made a world of difference in low-end. So many people get caught up in tweaks and cables and have horrible speaker placement.. (and I don't think used Kimber 8 is caught up in cables or tweaks. It's The $35k power cable guys that are the idiots) or have a light dimmer switch on the same circuit as their turntable and buy a $1000 cartridge because "it sounds better" and all you can hear is 60cycle hum from the dimmer 1000x yes. I've referred the book "get better sound" on numerous occasions just to get entangled with someone who will spend big to get nothing in return. Power is something I'd often overlooked until I went to a relative's house and helped him with an upgrade to a newer, higher quality wall-plug (duplex) and a second-hand Nordost power cable. Cleaner, more efficient power really filled in the bottom end, I was shocked! 1000x yes. I've referred the book "get better sound" on numerous occasions just to get entangled with someone who will spend big to get nothing in return. It's quite easy to either get caught up in the law of diminishing returns or to blindly fork over money with no results Thrift store lamp cord for the win. kampman Posted January 10, 2015 Report Share Posted January 10, 2015 Last weekend I bought a set of JBL L80Ts that have restored veneer and freshly refoamed woofers. They're a major improvement over the Sansuis I had before (what an understatement!) but as some AK posters have discussed their treble can be a little harsh/forward. I'm debating whether I should try the L80T3 crossover mod (or just find a set of them) but I'm gonna give myself a little more time to see if I get used to them first. I worked with the guy at Eminence to design them and went this route because these supposedly give close to horn loaded subwoofer output in a smaller cabinet. Finished them late last night so I haven't had a chance to test them, that'll be tonight. Hoping to do damage to my house's foundation with these monsters. Speaking of interconnects... I've never been a money spender when it comes to wire. Make sure the gauge is good, and the ends are terminated well and that's all that matters IMO. I make my own RCAs and speaker wire, if it's a digital cable I buy the cheapest option available. This is some speaker wire I made for these subs, soldered to the Speakon connector. I braided it because I like the way it looks, plus I didn't have any 12 gauge wire around so I used 2 strands of 14 gauge (which gives me ~11 gauge), braiding doesn't give any acoustic rewards whatsoever. We're driving them with 2 Crown XTi 1002 amps, one amp bridged per sub. They're super clean and very loud, but they don't play super low. For example; Talking Heads, Burning Down the House will rattle the windows in the church, but Katy Perry's Dark Horse isn't anywhere near as boomy as it should be. These subs drop quick below about 35 hz. @ v4lve... Kimber is beautiful wire, but my pockets aren't deep enough to justify the price of entry. mattsk8 Posted March 23, 2015 Report Share Posted March 23, 2015 (edited) Picked up a Spectral DMC-5 preamp and a modified Carver 1.5t amplifier from a friend of mine for my music system. I was using a B&K Reference 50 preamp and an Adcom 5500 amp and those sounded good together, but I can't believe the difference the Spectral preamp makes over the B&K, it's almost like it lets too much through. And for as small and light as it is, the Carver amp definitely has more oomph than the huge Adcom. Next will be building a bar, with this built into it, rather than the table it's on now. Doing this freed up my old system, so I put it in my shop. Overkill for a shop system for sure, but I love it. mattsk8 Posted April 27, 2015 Report Share Posted April 27, 2015 Axpona last weekend in Chicago was AMAZING!! Nothing like drooling over $500k+ sound systems for 3 days. The highlight of the show was definitely the Seaton Sound room. http://www.seatonsound.net/Seaton Sound is located in Morton Grove, IL and had the LOUDEST system I've ever heard in my life; it was Motorhead loud with crystal clear clarity. I was out in the lobby relaxing when the concrete started shaking so I went into their room. I'm guessing they were playing a Warren Miller snowboarding video. 16 subwoofers, 24,000 watts, 3 6ft tall fronts, and all the surround speakers to complete the system. I honestly had to fight back emotions, it brought a tear to my eye. The best part is, at a show filled with stupid expensive, unobtanium sound systems, the entire system cost was $32k. Pricey... yes, but not compared to most of the others there.The whole show was incredible.
