I have a pair of Citizens, a Fredrique Constant, and am hoping in the next year or so to get into Omegas. As my best friend is getting married in a year, and we both share an appreciation for nice timepieces, I was thinking about getting him a watch. He likes the fine timepieces like Omega and Tag, but has also always been into Luminox. Does anyone here own one? And on another note, does anyone have any other watches they like and would suggest? And putting on my watch snob hat for a moment I don't think I'd qualify Omega and Tag as "fine" timepieces, except for a few of them. Don't get me wrong, I love my Tag, but for the most part they are solid mid level mass-produced consumer luxury watches. Obviously 20 steps above Timex, but you get the point. What's your budget for this gift? And anything in particular your friend would like in a watch? Face size? Water resistant? Leather/metal band? Etc. I also have a Movado 800 series in a box somewhere but its quartz so it doesn't count. The wife's; swatch, swatch, swatch, swatch, swatch, swatch, swatch, swatch, swatch, swatch, swatch, swatch, swatch, swatch, swatch, swatch, swatch. Interesting..I would expect that being THE watch brand of the SEALS and whatnot that they'd be higher quality. Mainly I was looking into Luminox because although he's not a military man, he's into tactical type things and they make a few nicer looking pieces alongside the purpose driven ones. He's always been into watches but somehow he comes back to Luminox every time and I thought I'd inquire about the quality. As I'm still a bit younger, I look to Tags and Omegas to be more luxury just because I'm still establishing myself, so I look at a $4k watch as a reach for me. I know there are a ton of much finer pieces out there for sure though, you're right. Ultimately I'm looking to spend somewhere around $500 but no more than $1k. Like I said, he likes the tactical style of Luminox, but he's not as much of a snob and just appreciates a nice watch. I considered Tissot, Citizen, and Luminox and am just thinking what else is in that range. I think something like a 40-42mm would be good, leather preferred but not too important, water resistance isn't too important (30m is fine). In looking a bit more, I'm heavily considering a Luminox Atacama Field Chronograph unless something else jumps out at me in the coming months. If he's into the "military" style (and you don't mind buying a more off-beat brand) I got a Tsovet last year as a gift and absolutely love it. Not that it means anything but Esquire's written them up a few times, and always given them positive reviews. I've been asked if it's a Panerai more than once, which I'll take as a compliment! It has an unusually loud mechanical alarm and an interesting history in automatic watches. More reserved than many of the big avionic and diving chronographs many enthusiasts seem to prefer. I completely forgot about Tsovet. Someone posted one on IG that I came across and I started following them, but now I've completely forgot about them. I just really LOVE mechanical watches, and have worked with a friend who is a horologist for ages. I inherited a Rado Captain Cook when I was 12, and that's when this passion of collecting watches started. Timepieces are not to brag about, while having a cocktail. To me they are magnificent tools, ones to measure the one thing we as humans value so much, time. Here are a few, ESQ his and hers - Interesting enough, mine was purchased in 1994 (first watch purchased by me) and when I married my wife in 2004, I found hers on ebay. Baume & Mercier capeland - wife's Tag Heuer - (1) 1000 diver, several (5) professional 200meters (some of my best watches). 1996 Tag Heuer Link SEL - SS and brushed steel 1995 Tag Heuer Link SEL 18kt gf / Ss - Tag Formula 1, have pretty much 2 Chronos and one regular one Carrera Some of my vintages - 1970 Girrard-Perregaux 1960's Girard-Perregaux 14kt solid gold 1923- 10kt Solid Gold Benrus - with a gorgeous running 17jewels movement. 1940 Orator - Love this thing! 1950s Longines 10kt white gold 1980 Citizen Aqualand Omega- 1958 - Seamaster runs amazing cal 601 1980 - 18kt Solid bar constellation cal 1343 1984 - seamaster cal 1342 1955 - Deville cal 925 ( i think lol ) 1965 - Constellation 14kt Some of my rare pieces - - Wakmann Regate Lemania 1341 - Wakmann with an Alarm - Not so rare but cool, Seiko with a Valjoux mvmt.
