1800S Coolant Temp

Hi Folks,

I am looking at a 1969 1800S 144k on the odo, manual trans, the car is in over all good condition.

We took it for a seven to eight mile test drive all local roads nothing too strenuous.

The coolant gauge at the end of the drive read about 230 degrees or about 2/3 up.

The air temp was in the mid 80's and low humidity.

At the end something smelled a bit hot but I was not able to figure it out.

The coolant bottle was a few inches from max.

The car was a daily driver for most of its life and then sat in the garage since 1984, driven on and off.

So what do you think about the coolant temp?

Thanks

Chris

Odds are the thermostat hasn't aged well, cheap to fix. Otherwise there may be some issue with the radiator, especially if it's had old coolant in it for years and years. If you had access to a radiator shop that can flow test, a very quick diagnosis of the matter would be at hand. Another possibility would be dirt in the radiator fins, back flush (opposite the normal air flow) with an heavy flow of water usually takes care of that. If it has an viscus fan clutch, might check it when hot to see if it's stiff to turn by hand, otherwise if not, just need an new one, stay away from tropical versions unless you live there, or just really like the sound the fan makes..

IINM, the biggest issue with these cars is rust.
