What Should I Get?

Hey guys! I apologize for my lack of knowledge in audio installations but I am a fast learner.

Basically I want sub. I only want one because although bass is nice, I am not going to go crazy.

I have picked out this as the sub I want to install. The RMS is 350 watts but the MAX is 1200, which seems like a huge gap. So I was thinking I would kick it up a bit more to 500 watts or so, good idea, or no?

Secondly, I have no idea which amp I should buy or what specs on the amp I should go for. Could you please explain what I am looking for in an amp and what wattage's I need along with some amp recommendations.

Lastly, I am going to install the system myself. I am pretty good with wiring and such and I know I can do a clean install, I just need to know how I get the two RCA cables from the stock stereo head unit, like what part do I need to buy and how/where do I hook it up!

Thanks so much,

Max

A few questions:

Which headunit?

Which car?

I have a sub install thread on here if you wanna look for it. Its for P80's. I would suggest a single 12. I have one in a sealed box in my R, its great. My friend had one in the same box im his sedan, it bumped hard too. And mine only has about 350 RMS and 700 peak or something. Ill find my install thread and post it.

Edit: here >t

DOUBLE EDIT: I was on mobile before, so I didn't see your sig.

Wattage ratings on a driver are meaningless numbers when it comes to performance.

They are just an amount of power they can handle FROM an amplifier.

A "1200 watt" sub is no louder than a 200 watt sub if you're only feeding it 50 watts RMS.. and if the lower rated sub has a higher DB sensitivity rating it actually can play louder

1200 watt with an 80db/1 watt/ 1 meter rating will not be as loud as 200 watt with 96db/1 watt/ 1 meter

Don't get hung up on wattage numbers..its almost always marketing garbage and hype.

An old school rockford fosgate Punch 45 will kick a lot of modern "1000 watt" cheapo amps ass'

  • 3 weeks later...

I have a 98GLT as well, I have one 10" in the rear with a small box (.95 cubic feet) with a 260watt Sherwood amp (it's 18 years old!) bridged mono is more than enough for me.

I'm running home a theater sub (Dayton audio's Titanic) and it hits deeper than the MTX blue thunder's (old skool) dual set up I had years ago.

Personally there's so much out there, take a look at specs, pay attention to RMS and (THD, lower is better) You don't need a lot of wattage to get the job done.

I can't help much on head units Mine is 10 years old.

But if you are going to install your own system get your electrical right.

I'd first read up on a couple of basic install threads on any of the car audio forums to give you and idea of what you need.

I'd recommend upgrading the head unit. Not just for performance but also for ease of install. You can get the correct wiring harness to connect to the stock speakers and then you'll have the necessary RCa outputs to connect to your amp for your sub.

REAudio 12 inch SEX series. you can go to sonicelectronix.com and get the 12 inch sub. I have one in my S70 and it hits hard as hell. every review ive read from people who have 2 of them say they wish they had only got one, or that its just stupid bass. Theyre rated at 600 or 700 watts RMS. It is actually really bad for a sub to under power it.

Right, only if your underpower has a high THD will you run the risk of damaging the sub coil. Other wise clean power in clean bass out.
