Awesome stuff Tommy! Can't wait to see the pics from part 2 :D

This picture ('>) looks familiar - that bridge is ~15 minutes from me! Wish I had know you guys were doing this, I would've taken a ride out and lent a hand!

Thanks Andy! I didn't even realize you were this close, would have been great to see you. This won't be my last road trip out there so next time I'll send you a message and we'll take a trip up there.

Awesome stuff, as Travis said: great to see this still happening through VS.

The RMS is a pain to get right. Try finding a piece of PCV that is the same diameter and use it to push it in evenly. Easiest way to do it, otherwise you'll bunch up somewhere and fold it without knowing it.

I would recommend changing that water pipe that runs above the exhaust. Mine looks the same and is super thin in one spot. It will eventually rust through. IIRC, the part is cheap from Volvo, I have a new one to install ASAP.

Thanks Matt!

As Jay said, the water pipe was removed for a different one off of one of the engines in the garage.

I was curious, do you happen to have the part number for the pipe itself off of an R motor to fit a k24? I literally have been searching for a half hour and have come up with nothing.

Awesome thread Tommy! Glad it all went mostly according to plan, hopefully I can make it out to Gabe's for part 2 in a few weeks!

DO IT

Looks like a good time! Once I find a suitable daily I've been considering a very similar swap!

Cant wait to see pictures and videos from round 2!

again, DO IT you won't regret it!

It was a fun weekend indeed! Glad we got her done, hope she is treating you well.....besides the RMS leak :/

Oh she is. We're taking it easy until the motor comes out again then she will be tearing up the streets of Naperville ;) RMS is the only thing that went wrong, honestly for a complete manual/rn/turbo swap in 1.5 days... Pretty good if you ask me

Ahh fun indeed we almost never get to do this stuff anymore we all grew up :(

Truth, but being able to do this from time to time means that we really haven't in all retrospect ;)

You owe me a new RMS.

Yea Mike the 2.4L RN was hard to turn down seeing as my current motor stock 2.3L was at 235,000mi even though running very well still.

Finn, it really sucked realizing it after only the first 200miles on the trip back. Oh well, kept it topped off and stopped every 100miles to make sure all was kosher. Engine pull is on the 18th so I won't make the same mistake again with that damn seal  you should come up, it's gonna be another shenanigan filled few days.

Just read through it and realized how many pictures I uploaded.

after you get the RMS sorted, I'm interested to see what you think of low end power vs the 2.3L

Very noticable difference. I'm not building my 2.3 anymore. I'm jus gonna grab a rn and call it a day........preferably a b5244t5

Almost as scary as being 45 miles from Carlisle and rubbing through a brake line and having to stop every couple of miles to top off the reservoir. I'm def gonna try to make it up there.

I did that on my v70 awd with pegs, wore through both rear lines. Vise grips and cable ties to the rescue

Holy shit. How did you rub through one? Another thing for me to be paranoid about :arob:

Volvo hillbillies I tell you  but ingenious nonetheless

Sounds like a Turbobricks special! I have learned not to take road trips right after major modifications/work. Tommy, I asked Stu to come up as well.

That's fine with me the more the merrier. Plus, I've never met you, and I miss Stu. It would be a great impromptu meet. Almost a better turnout than meets that are scheduled half a year in advance

Even with the shit ton of oil leaking the torque is so noticeable it's ridiculous.

Yessir it is. Let me know when we are swapping yours

Update:

This was an amazing time. Thanks again Gabe and Katherine for your hospitality to the MWC crew, and especially for the help and use of the tools for pulling my engine again... I'll say I'm getting pretty good at it. Not that I'll want to do it again anytime soon, I'd kinda just like to drive it

And Jay, Art, Justus, Smith, Aaron, and Tom (I guess) for helping as well on everything

Pics were scarce... but beer/liquor/food was not!

And the RMS was definitely leaking but the clutch cover (?) and the flywheel were remarkably clean, I am guessing that was the case because it just slung the oil everywhere. There was a tiny bubble/blemish on the seal itself along with a few blemishes, probably from the old seal I originally removed, on the crank surface where you insert the seal. So I cleaned it up really well and then we put some grease and black RTV sealant on it and stuffed it in there. and crossed my fingers.

I live approximately 119 miles from Gabe's house and so when I stopped to get fuel on the way home I was roughly 100 miles outside of Milwaukee and I was very anxious to check the oil (I checked it and made a mental note of the level before leaving Gabe's). As I was filling up I popped the hood and checked the dipstick...

SAME AMOUNT OF OIL AS WHEN I LEFT :o:D:wub:

I jumped up and down in the gas station parking lot shouting WOOOHOOO!!! while onlookers looked at me like "who the fuck is this guy" <_<

I didn't hammer on it much on the way home as I want the seal to set and really just settle in there. I will be doing the PCV and new IC hoses and a boatload of maintenance crap in the coming months so the seal will hold when I turn up the bewst
