Good Speakers For Doors In 850?

Recommended Posts

There are threads with suggestions for speakers from as long ago as 10 years, but I figure there are newer options, especially since some have been discontinued since then.

I'm considering the following:

Alpine SPR-50 5.25"

MB Quartz RCE 213 5.25" (discontinued)

I am currently powering my speakers using an older Alpine MRP-F200 amp that I was recommended many years ago.

Which speakers would you guys recommend? I want more low end without the need to add a sub or kick panels.

If you can find them in a store, give the Polk DB5251's a listen. I really liked the db6501s (6.5" version) in my friends' car, and if I ever decide to upgrade from my Alpine SPS-600Cs, I will probably go with the db6501s. They have a pretty good midrange, and can play slightly lower that either set you listed.

Granted, no 5.25" speaker will really play much lower than ~55hz, but you can install some 6x9s on the rear parcel shelf to help fill in the low end if you don't want a dedicated sub.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll try to find a store that has these so I can listen to them. One of my concerns is fit (too deep, for instance); I should measure the maximum depth first.

I definitely plan on getting something for the parcel shelf to see if I can add to the bass. Granted it would be an infinite baffle setup (which isn't the best), but I hope it will help. Need to seal up the rear deck well, too.

PS: Where did you take those photos of your car by the warehouse? Looks like a good location.

Yeah, definitely measure for depth, and listen to as many options as you can in person. Sound preference really varies from 1 person to another, and a setup that I like, you might not. Once you know what kind of sound you're looking for you can compare and contrast specs on different setups to figure out what you want to install. I really like Crutchfield for info on different setups, but don't usually order from them because their prices are always the highest on the market

Adding 6x9s on the parcel shelf would really help, because the bigger speakers can play much lower than the 5.25" doors can. If you want still more bass, you could also look at adding a couple 8" subs on the parcel shelf with a small sealed enclosure on the underside of the shelf.

I'm not sure which pictures you're referring to, but more than likely it's in Troy NY. It's an old industrial city, so lots of warehouse-esque areas to shoot in. It's where I went to school over the last 5 years, and still visit fairly often.

I've always been really successful and pleased with Focal 5 1/4 speakers in my doors. Installed easily in two different 850s with hardly any fitment issues. If you get the models with the crossovers and tweeters, the tweeters will drop right into the factory dash tweeter pods with just some basic modding. Be sure to run an amp because the factory head unit doesn't run the juice to give these speakers justice!

They are pretty pricey on Crutchfield, but eBay has good deals on them.

I got these

http://www.woofersetc.com/p-4609-cl-51a-25-pro-cdt-audio-classic-525-2-way-component-speakers.aspx

and I like them.

I added one of these

http://www.amazon.com/SD-2-D2-Sundown-2-Ohms-Subwoofer/dp/B00JVBFUG8/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1421800212&sr=8-14&keywords=sundown+8

in a box that I screwed into the back seat. I opened up the "ski" hole in the middle seat and the sub is facing into the cabin. Sounds killer. I only have the 2 comps up front and the sub. comps are each being powered with 200w and the sub is powered with 400w

If I remember, i'll take a picture when I get home.

I was also going to suggest the Polk Audio db5251 5-1/4" component speaker system. I had these in my 850 and my 740. Very good for the price and they fit easily. They will sound best with an amp giving more power than the stock head unit or even the t5r/850r amp.
