New To Owning A Volvo

Hello there! My name is Robert and I picked up my first Volvo off a friend last weekend after itching to buy it for almost 3 years. It's a 2001 S60 T5 with a M56 transmission, of course it has the spaceball shifter which I am looking to replace with a leather boot and new knob.

This car has been extremely well maintained its entire life by the previous owner (minus the paint, he never had it detailed).

Plenty of maintenance and modifications planned in the very short future. Going to start off with the basics such as replacing the timing belt and water pump, oil and gear oil change, replace the broken head light lens, replace the destroyed fog lamp, and replace the clutch position sensor to fix the dang cruise control.

Once all that fun stuff is done begins the tinkering. I would appreciate any suggestions on what steps to take before implementing any of my current planned mods:

BS Racing ZG01BR Coilovers (currently have 2 blown shocks on opposite corners)

OBX-R Stainless Steel turbo downpipe

Phuzzy Motorsports P2 - PhMIC 4th Gen FMIC upgrade with solid intercooler piping and meth injection port for future upgrades

IPD HD-TCV (Current one is on its way out causing some issues)

IPD Heavy Duty compressor bypass valve (current one is worn out causing some issues)

Redline MTL Gear Oil

IPD replacement PCV Breather System kit

IPD Mesh Grille

IPD Strut Bar Conversion Kit

I will also be upgrading the sound system in the car immediately with a 3 way Focal component system for the front doors and appropriately size coaxial rear door and deck speakers.

I am very open to any and all input regarding what I have planned. I'm not looking to immediately up the boost from the turbo, the will be a longer term project. I look forward to being an active member of this forum and have already found quite a few different threads that have provided very useful information

Welcome! I'm guessing you're Navy? I lived in Lake Stevens while stationed in Everett. No advice on your S60, I'm more of an 850R fan.

Nope, I am not in the military. I have worked on military aircraft before but only as a civilian (avionics and racks of "Big Brother" equipment) mostly in high altitude turbo props. I work in Everett as an IT Engineer and help desk supervisor for a managed service provider.

Welcome to the Family, keep a eye on that cluster and ETM (throttle body) they are the weak parts on those cars/years, being manual you avoid the biggest shame on 01-04 S60(P2 series) the tragicbox transmission.

before you crank up the boost(an you will believe me) upgrade the clutch ?!? no mileage posted.

Don't get the phuzzy kit, it's very poor quality / fitment. Save up an extra $300 and get the Snabb FMIC kit instead. Otherwise, solid plans!

I have heard that there are fitment issues in certain cases with the phuzzy kit, but from what I understand though it's mostly the older kits that were made that weren't quite right and that the new ones aren't presenting issues. Of course what I read could be complete BS, but I suppose we'll find out when it shows up as I've already ordered it...

The ETM is up at the top of my list of maintenance for the car. It will get an extremely thorough cleaning and mechanical checkout before I even start thinking about upping the boost. Luckily this car was babied by the previous owner and while the clutch has never been replaced it looks and feels brand spanking new.

Can explain a little bit more on the cluster? Still not terribly familiar with all the terminology for this car yet.

welcome! Great find, T5M's aren't the most common.

Thanks! I fell in love with the car when I first drove it a couple years ago. Told the previous owner if he's ever getting rid of it let me know first as I want it which he did not forget about. Sold my 2009 Mazda 3s and picked this baby up. The Mazda had 60,870 miles on the clock when I sold it and had just come out of a 60K factory specified service interval that I performed, sold it for a very nice profit. I honestly can't say I miss the car as it was completely gutless with an auto-tragic, it did look good though.

More peeps from the PNW! Welcome to the cult.

Always good to see more Volvo peeps in the PNW! Seems like everyone is over on the East coast for the most part.

Derp, just realized you're probably referring to the gauge cluster. Haven't had any issues with it yet, it does however like to drop the needle from 3mph to 0mph rather than transition down smoothly, the tach is very smooth and reports accurately when comparing to my ODB reader. Other than that behavior it's been a good car minus the P0302 which turned out to be spark plugs that were done for 10K miles ago...

I ended up taking your advice and canceled my order after having no correspondence after placing my order 2 weeks ago. Went ahead and ordered the Snabb FMIC kit
