tuner4life
So the original grey leather wrapped steering wheel in my 1998 C70 had started to get sticky and disintegrate, none of the standard parts store steering wheel covers would fit (too loose), so I replaced it with another used, but good condition wheel that I got on ebay, it did the same thing shortly after. So now I am using another fairly good condition one that I found in the junk yard. It is starting to have the same problems. Just has a kind of stickyness to it. I have tried to clean it with Lexol cleaner, and it felt like I was just making it worse. I then tried using the Lexol conditioner per some folks recommendations.. It doesn't seem to make much of a difference except maybe make it more sticky. I don't know why I am going through wheels like this, but it isn't happening on any of my other vehicles. I don't use any chemicals on my hands and they are usually pretty clean when driving this car. The wheel that is in the car till seems to be in good shape (not peeling or anything), but the leather is smooth on the left side where it has been more used, and still has texture on the right side where it looks and feels much nicer. Is there any sort of chemical or conditioner that I can put on it to make it last? Or am I just going to have to pony up and spend a few hundred on a NOS wheel? Burn-E
If you use the Leatherique solution it will coat and harden around the leather on the wheel. That's what the previous owner of my S70 used on the steering wheel. It's still leather but it basically feels like soft plastic. The benefit is it doesn't deteriorate and it's very easy to clean. I've had several people comment on how clean my tan leather wheel is. That's one approach to take. The other approach is to get the guys from that Eastern European company on here to send you an upgraded skin for your wheel. Many other members on the forum have used them to great results. Snabb T5M
My S70 steering wheel was getting crappy also, so I bought the IPD leather wheel skin cover and love the steering wheel now!!!! Nice and leathery plus the skin makes the steering wheel a little bit bigger for increased grip.http://www.ipdusa.com/prodtype.asp?CAT_ID=1235&numRecordPosition=0&categorycrumbs=999Or do as Alain said and contact Redline Goods. I've got their skins for my shift boot and arm rest. Great stuff!!!
tuner4life
Thanks guys, that redline cover does look very nice. I'll probably look into that.
V850t5r
I can recommend you Royal steering wheels. This guy is very well known for his work over at the Bmw forums. And I myself can vouch for him, i had my steering wheel in my M5 updated and re trimmed and it looks brand new. I believe he takes £110-150 for a re trim. The steering wheel is the one of the things in your car you are in contact with the most.. and its often forgotten how much the feel of a good steering wheel has to say for the driving experience. But that's my opinion, i like new stuff, hehe. Here is how it looked like when done
db130
would you consider a factory leather wheel with wood inserts?
WayAway
Something to think about.....
tuner4life
I would certainly consider a leather wheel with wood inserts! But my car has that dark walnut wood trim that evidently never came on anything and is impossible to find.

tuner4life
Yeah, that unicorn of a wheel!! lol. That would be awesome, but I can't seem to get one anymore. The local dealer had no idea.. Do you have the matching shifter too?
Burn-E
You mean the black walnut manual shifter handle that was only available for the T5-R? I considered buying one a while back from CJ but decided that I preferred the grip of the leather handle.Call up Darrel Waltrip Volvo and see if they can get you a steering wheel. That's where I got mine but that was 5 years ago.

Big Will
Would be interesting to see a black marble steering wheel. I don't believe it exists...I've never heard of it and have never seen one on any car in Europe. The only ones I know of are red walnut, black walnut, birch (which I have), and the R with the alcanterra insert. The rest are just leather steering wheels, some are thicker than others (i.e. the 99/00 R) but I don't think any others have inserts. At least over here, the black marble came on 'black line' cars which all had normal steering wheels (non-R but the slightly thicker wheels). Btw, there are a couple of used claret red walnut (w/soft leather from 99+) wood trim steering wheels for P80s in Sweden that I can have shipped to me and then pass on to you guys (they don't ship straight to the U.S. in most cases). All I would ask is to throw me a few bucks for my time if anyone's interested.
goldponcho
Will, I'd go back to Black Walnut if you could find a matching steering wheel, my original wheel is about used up. Otherwise, I have an idea that'll take some time.
