privatryan Posted September 7, 2015 Report Posted September 7, 2015 So i think I've got most everything nailed down as far as parts i will use and such, still some things to be solidified. What I'm doing now is forged rods, new bearings, probably new valve springs etc, upgraded stock mount intercooler, m4.4. What i haven't really figured out is whether to use oem bearings or risk the toga, as well which injectors green or other, whether to go 20t or stay 19t, and i believe finally whether I'll need a larger fuel pump. Power goals where 350-380 bhp.
privatryan Posted September 9, 2015 Author Report Posted September 9, 2015 Worked a little tonight. Cleaned out my oil pan at work and removed all my pistons, now it's measuring time. Still have to take the head apart. What, if any, upgraded valve springs are people using? I should have snapped a picture of the valves but everything was white baked on crud, maybe running too lean.
gdog Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 Who's doing your tune? Those are pretty high hp goals for td04hl I would think..? You going to run alcohol? Track car or daily driver?
Stefan Mohammed Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 Pretty sure you won't need upgraded valve springs for this kind of build. A TD04HL turbo will run out of steam long before you get into the RPM range where the OEM valve springs become a weak link. Hell...even with my TD06SL2-20G 8cm my valve springs would be fine and that's a huge shift in the powerband from a TD04! Just for the record Autotech makes the upgraded springs.

Well I'm noticing a trend between the info i get from Ard and the info i get generally from this forum. For instance i havw been told that green's (now blue) won't be enough for my power goals but ard says it will be fine, the other ia the turbo situation, and this isn't the first time it's been mentioned. I was trying to upload pictures last night and it tells me i only have. 3 mb left for upload.
BlackT5 Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 Get the valve springs from autotech, they're like half the price.

DScottM Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 1900 for cams is also steep... My buddy Quentin (T5RM forum handle) just got a set of custom ground KM cams from overseas at around 1100 i think and they are meaty as stuff...

privatryan Posted September 9, 2015 Author Report Posted September 9, 2015 So what's the deal with the pictures issue? Anybody have some suggestions?
Tightmopedman9 Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 Greens will be fine for a 19T running gasoline. The 'new green's ie the new blue injectors, flow 410cc (as opposed to the greens at 440cc); they will also be fine for a 19t and gasoline. There might be a bit of confusion with the blue injectors, since there are a set of older, OEM injectors that are light blue and flow 347cc. If you want to use E85 you'll need to step up to 550cc or larger. If you do decide to run E85 and get appropriately sized injectors, make sure you don't cheap out on them. Injector choice is very important; I've had a few customers who went with cheap injectors, only to end up replacing them very shortly after getting them in the car. If you're interested in a custom tune, check out the website in my sig. Feel free to PM with any questions regarding tuning.

Should i be looking for a new fuel pump also? Any other supporting mods i should consider?
Tightmopedman9 Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 You stated your desired power goal in BHP. I don't know anyone, other than a few Swedes, who have taken an engine out and put it on a engine dyno. Therefore, I can't tell you what a 19t will make in terms of BHP. However, I can tell you that a 19t will make a little over 300WHP. Are you auto or manual? If you're auto you'll need to get a transmission cooler and with the 19t you'll be near the limits of the auto trans. You don't need to perform any internal engine work to support a 19t. However, it isn't a bad idea to refresh an old engine to get the most out of it. With rods, the 2.3L block and stock cast pistons you'll be able to put down over 500WHP.Stock bearings are fine and what I use, along with many others. Make sure you get the rods checked at a machine shop to make sure both ends are in spec. When you assemble everything make sure to double check all tolerances. Also, now would be a good time to do the rings. I recommend Hastings. You will need a new fuel pump. The stock fuel pump could probably support the power you're looking for when it was new, but now that it's old, you might as well replace it. The DW200 would be fine. Cams are going to cost you more than $1000. While they are an easy way to make power, I don't see that much cost being justified until your engine is more modified. I would put that $1000 towards the purchase of a 20G, and instead of netting a few HP under the curve, you'll be at 400WHP.Upgrade your crankcase breather and install an inline catch can. There are many threads on the forum detailing the process.
