No but seriously, he was the first post in that thread on VS. What's wrong with bringing it up here too ? Look at Jon's comment, as well as the post on SS mentioning what happened in an accident. I think Will brings up a good point: why expose yourself to the liability ?
Kit Vexed
i hear you matt, but it's just silly that of ALL the mods we've (yes, myself included) done that have either compromised reliability or safety over the years, we're talking about THIS one as if any of the others are excusable at this point... who cares? and i was simply making a point that this thread is riding on the coat tails of another in another forum?? quam about it THERE where it began... that's it. leave it there. since when is everybody all worried about every else's safety on here lol.. matt b
Which mods detract from safety ? Bigger turbo ? No. Bigger brakes ? No. Coil overs ? No. Cat back exhaust ? No, unless you count lung cancer as death. I'm not seeing your point.
Yellow95
I am finding it really hard to believe that 1- This thing will add anything to the vehicle. Doesn't even look good. 2- That it would be a safety factor. There is no way the brace directs the motor in any direction in an accident that will be severely altered by the billet piece. Yes I agree that the gauges propelled at your face by an airbag would be a MUCH greater risk to the driver. 3- It pains me greatly that I have an opinion on anything that is remotely close to KV's opinion. ErikS
Wouldn't it be easier to just get a can of silver spray paint? I'm lost as to any benefit besides a shiny piece of metal there.
Big Will
I wasn't planning on responding to this but since it has escalated a bit I'll just quickly explain. My concern stemmed from being an EMT for a number of years, seeing some horrible accidents and remembering that this particular bracket was designed to aid the engine in not entering the occupants space. And as the person making the part was surely just an individual making a part, he might not have thought through that this has some safety implications and potential liability. That's all. I brought it up first to that person, not in a disrespectful way and then shared my concern here since this is also a place with a lot of people that might be interested in the part (as we mainly have P80 owners here). Was my concern clouded by the fact that I've lived in Germany for a few years where un-certified parts could cause an owner trouble? As I said before, maybe. In any case Kit Vexed, perhaps it's just how things come across on the internet but I don't think this required the attitude that you brought. gdog
@BW: you (as well as others) already said/explained all that here in this thread and in the SS post. The point you raised is certainly valid. This mod is just ... words escape me... silly, and really dumb IMO of the original poster: http://forums.swedespeed.com/member.php?80216-STSmachining&s=a13832d352f05b16b73c731e2aba8bf3 Like others mentioned it's one thing to mod your own car, but it's a completely different thing to sell a mod that compromises a safety feature. I hope he's at least adding the "for off-road use only" sticker.. KV responded to an almost two month old dead thread for one reason; to stir the pot and get a reaction; he got what he wanted.. Kit Vexed
i wasn't trying to 'stir' anything.. just not on here EVERY day like you are and never saw this until a day ago.. and when i saw this thread, i wondered why anyone even cares about this piece?? this just comes off as 'something to complain about' on here to me.. it's futile. you have your opinion and i have mine. 10 hours ago, matt b said: Which mods detract from safety ? I'm not seeing your point. i already stated on the previous page what mods detract from safety.. unless you consider an airbag useless? or cutting the front bumper no big deal either.. 9 hours ago, Yellow95 said: I am finding it really hard to believe that 1- This thing will add anything to the vehicle. claymoreT10
I'm on the fence with this one, but wouldn't the argument about engine intrusion mean that all those universal engine torque dampers fall into the same category ? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-Engine-Damper-Support-Turbo-Intercooler-Torque-Kit-Race-Blue-Evo-Volvo-/321903807967?hash=item4af2f64ddf:g:oR8AAOSw~bFWLo34
