Ihatespeedbumps
In an attempt to preserve my 04 V70R Flash Green/Atacama M66 V70R, I have been searching tirelessly for a new DD. After a couple of CL encounters, I found the perfect candidate, an 01 V70 T5 Auto. It is no secret on this forum that I have been wildly critical of 01-02 P2 models, and for good reason. They are rife with transmission failure and ETM issues in 01. So what did I do? Bought one. Found it on CL for a grand with 135k on the clock. Since I have been vocal about my criticism, I never really shared the success I had in repairing these early P2 models. While they haven't all been home runs, many I repaired while working in the shop have been good vehicles that I saw on a regular basis for maitenance. Since they can be purchased so cheap now it's worth giving them a second look. The vehicle in question: This vehicle was purchased with the dreaded "Transmission Service Urgent" message in the DIM. The TCM had never been updated to remove the neutral function control. You can follow my transmission repair and updates here, Project AW55-50/51 Additional projects for this vehicle will be focused around things sourced from salvage yards. The goal being to have a nice DD kept at a very reasonable price. In the near future a front suspension rebuild is in order. Timing belt and PCV system. Adding front heated seats with OEM components. I will make a write up for this one. Finding some odds and ends like Euro rails, OEM trailer hitch from the junkyard (vehicle previously had one) fog lights and anything else interesting I can find. Commander Riker
While they are rife with those aforementioned issues, I will say... you scored on that one! So what... you can fix that stuff. No big deal. Grats on the pickup.
matt b
Meguiar's Polishing Compound + a DA buffer on the headlights and they will look like new. Just tape off the bumpers and hood to avoid wearing through the paint. How's the interior, will this become the official rescue animal mobile ? Ihatespeedbumps
Thanks Matt! It's a bit decieving, that is actually dew due to the picture being taken early in the AM. The lenses on the early models were all glass. Interior is in really great shape, and it's charcoal w/ the sport seats. The steering wheel is super sticky but I found one in good shape at the JY this weekend. Yes, this will be the animal hauler, DD an vacation mobile. I do need to give some love to the black trim though!
matt b
Showroom Black, beats anything I've used. If you get some on your paint, just wipe it off with Windex.
JoshV70
Cool! I wish I didn't sell my 01 T5 - after I put solenoids (among a bunch of other work elsewhere) the car was fantastic. Good luck.
Ihatespeedbumps
I remember yours, it was red/tan and appeared to be EXTREMELY clean from you photos.
Ihatespeedbumps
Couple of projects knocked out this weekend. Got the oil changed, the previous owner didn't drive it much but the previous owner hadn't changed the oil in almost 2 years. Installed a new thermostat and now I have full heat again. Swapped the sticky steering wheel for one that I found at the junkyard. Not perfect, but much better than being stuck to the old one. Old New wheel Had picked up a grill an from an 06 S60 at the junkyard and then found out the dimensions for the grills are the same but the mounting is MUCH different. Will figure that out later. Still researching a DIY external trans cooler. In the meantime I've done a write up for a DIY turn signal stalk repair to correct the intermittent studder or non functioning stalk.. Removed the front timing cover to replace the timing belt. Found that the timing belt has been replaced at some point BUT the intake cam seal is seeping. Given the number of seals I've seen "pop out and say hello" I'm going to replace all of the engine seals VERY soon. Will clean and replace the PCV system at the same time. Found an oil leak at the turbo return line seals. To my amazement this car still had the original red o-ring. Also cleaned the ETM, and I think the highway studder has been cured. After a few more miles I will report more on this.
Ihatespeedbumps
Quick update. The weather finally cleared up and I got a chance to install new LCA's, spring seat and sway bar links. The car drives so much better. The tires purchased with the car as dry rotted to hell, so the new tires I ordered from tire rack showed up today. Next project is the timing belt and PCV system. I also found a gently used Xemodex ETM that I will be installing at that time. To date the transmission is shifting great after the Rostra solenoids have been installed. Will be adding a DIY cooler soon. Sorry, forgot to take pictures today :(
matt b
Still doing this in the driveway ? Props!
Ihatespeedbumps
Yep, still have the gravel driveway :( We are house shopping and hope to find something with a paved driveway. If I get really lucky I'll find something with a detached garage that I put a lift in!
matt b
That would rock! Working on your back sucks. I miss having access to a shop like I had in Lexington.
Ihatespeedbumps
Got the PCV system cleaned and replaced today. You can clearly see the watery sludge present in the system. The previous owner owned the car for 2 years and put less than 2k on the car, and it shows. Also completed the stage 0 with a fuel filter and air filter. Also picked up a gently used xemodex ETM the other day and installed that as well. My highway shudder off throttle is gone now. Hard to believe this thing still had the original ETM still. Picked up a set of roof rails cheap on CL the other day and got an OEM lock kit installed. Kayak season is right around the corner. not pictured, installed a sunroof from the JY as my original one no longer had the metal supports and rattled like crazy. Last week a new set of hankook's were installed as well. Next projects are to replace the timing belt as I'm not sure when it was replaced. I'm also going to install a Sirius setup that will incorporate with the factory HU. Most importantanly, the transmission continues to shift perfectly! Ihatespeedbumps
Not much of an update, picked up a pair of Yakima jaylow kayak racks. The weather is warming up!
Ihatespeedbumps
Couple of installs that just happened. Sirius unit that is directly tied to the FM antenna. I couldn't take terestrial radio anymore. Also fixed my broken shifter gates, only to have the shift knob button break when I put the knob back on Had a slow work day so I finally got around to swapping out the mirror glass with a functioning auto dimming mirror from the junkyard.
