Oreo931
I'm having an intermittent problem starting my car. 1997 850R w/ 137k miles. Stage 0 is done, ignition components (plugs, cap, rotor, wires) are all relatively new and OEM. It's hard to describe what's happening, it's like the engine will turn over, but it doesn't make the normal "chug chug chug" noise. It sounds like the engine is choking. See video below. No codes have come up. Battery is an older OEM Volvo battery, but doesn't seem to have any issues. Sometimes the car starts normally, other times it chokes like in the video. It's completely random. My guess is that the problem is related to the starter. Thoughts? http://vid104.photobucket.com/albums/m193/iamawass/Mobile%20Uploads/69C72919-66B5-403D-A76D-7237CE72E6F1.mp4
babyclaude
Definitely sounds starter related to me. Like the starter gear isn't engaging with the flywheel fully and is actually slipping off the teeth. I'd replace that before you end up with chipped teeth on the flywheel. I hope that helps. Thanks for the video,
Oreo931
After doing some more research, I've convinced myself that the problem is with the starter. I ordered a new OEM starter from Tasca. No going with a bosch b/c I previously had trouble with the reman. bosch alternators. Hopefully this will fix the problem and the flex plate isn't screwed up. Fran9690
I just replaced my starter last weekend for a noise similar to this. Thankfully, no damage to the ring gear on my flywheel. Starts wonderfully now.
Oreo931
Thanks guys. Will update this thread once I pop in the new starter. Driving the yellow car in the meantime so I don't damage anything.
gdog
Like everyone said, most likely the starter, but when you get if off, I would rotate the crank one rev and inspect the ring gear carefully for damage.
Oreo931
New starter fixed the problem. The teeth on the starter gear and flex plate were unharmed. I think the starter was just slowly dying. Interestingly, the car now starts faster and much more quietly with the new oem starter. Thanks all.
