The 98 V70R Costly affect

Recommended Posts

Everyone has their own story, level of interest and journey with their cars (Volvo and other makes).  Working on cold late nights, researching ideas and parts,, enjoying the moments when all is great, troubleshooting, going through trial and error when it isn't.

For some, it is about engineering and fabrication; the art of creation.  Coming out with something that is unique and awesome.  For others it is just about "making it the way it should be".

I happen to have two.  Both paid off, one from day 1.  No car payments.  Both with just enough mods or upgrades to have no desire for anything else.  For me, that is success.

No doubt.  I love my car, and in a way, all the money I've sunk into it.

The point of this thread though is that there is a likely correlation with the drive train to dollars spent.  Hell, somedays I've wish I've built a FWD.  They are probably easier to modify, and just as fun really.  The dollars to fun ratio is probably higher in that regard.  Still, I love the challenge of modifying the AWD car.

To continue on the costly affect...

New Motor, 04R (which for the RN swap I was missing A ton of parts)

Tranny Cooler

K24

Another K24 (the one that was installed was garbage)

Front 02 sensor

New front brake pads

And my driveshaft is on its way out. This will be my 3rd one

Being only a three year car, I love the challenge of the. Not a lot of people want to deal with them and most just go the FWD rout. Its a battle I do not plan on dropping

Oh yes, of course!

We have cars that are/were listed in a "semi-luxury class" (for their time), with decent mechanical design, and relatively limited support (compared to Chevy, Ford, MoPar, Porsche, Toyota/TRD, Honda, BMW).

It can be noted that we (those willing to modify) are a small community.  Much of the performance and mods that we enjoy today are due to those that take big chances, invest and re-invest, and share.  Lucky are we that have a small group of vendors and enthusiasts turned vendors that also keep us going.

And, we do what we can.  For me, doing an M66 swap was beyond my resources (of time and capital).    To stay AWD, I sourced an M58 from Canada instead.  I like my fwd also, it is fun too, but having an awd, independent rear suspension with a power plant that gets people to look at wagons differently is very cool.

I am thankful that we have members with such passion and are willing to be a part of this community.

My eyes are getting all watery, guys! I'm stoked to be part of this Volvo thing we've got going on.

Also, this thread is making me want to get an AWD. I'm a sucker for vehicular maintenance punishment.

Yesterday I got the C70 out of winter storage.. I pulled it into the house garage and went to move the V70R and the starter went.. Par for the course anymore.

It set a new record though. 26 days without an issue.

Bad picture of the duo.

Hmm, it has the opposite effect on me; every time I even think of looking at an awd, I make myself read this thread again..  works every time..

Hey, not that I don't admire all the work, pain, and suffering you guys have put into your awd R's!  Hats off to you's..  for sure!

AWD means A Wallet Drain. Its ok though - i own three of them and it is a sport to see how long you can go before something else breaks and will cost a fortune to fix. I liken it to maybe a vintage racer or a st ursanne hillclimb car. its the same dedication to get groceries or go on a sunday drive without incident.

Here goes.

Bought my Saffron R with a blown engine, rod 3 through the block in June 2014.

Immediately started ripping it apart.

Swapped in another 98R block. - New RMS, Cam seals, axle seals, front engine mount, heater core coupling, etc...

Full PCV

Spark plugs, rotor, cap, wires, engine, fuel, & cabin filters.

Snabb intake pipe

Complete 18T rebuild

Flashed ECU with rear O2 delete.

Complete e-brake assembly aside from the handle.

Left outer tie-rod.

Passenger side front axle boots

XC grille

New driver's side fender trim piece

Passenger exhaust trim surround

17" Propus Cs

Lot of random broken interior trim.

I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot, and that got me to here:

As of now it needs:

Passenger projector fog-light ballast replaced.

New struts.

Inner left tie-rod.

Jewels (willing to trade my ABMs).

how did you get projectors in the stock V70 foglight housings? Did you mix the V70 and C70 foglights together to create them?

This thread is like a volvo love orgy and should be in the R forum on SwedeSpeed.

Surprised they don't have it called "foRum"  or something.

Dropping more coin on my AWD car, but it's not AWD specific parts.  SNABB RIP and drop in intercooler, 630cc injectors, 3.5" MAF... this summer I want to build a proper big exhaust and add water methanol injection.  Apparently I hate having money.  :)
