Assuming you used Rustoleum Stops Rust Textured Black paint from a spray can it contains 50% acetone and that would have directly attacked the methyl methylacrylate that is the monomer used to fuse the powder in Plast-Aid. Among the many other categories we sell into, my company manufactures all of the products under the Permatex brand (direct competitors to Loctite and Plast-Aid and JB Weld). I talk with chemists about these kinds of issues on a regular basis. Your assumption is right, if you had used a water based paint with a roller or air gun you likely wouldn't have run into that issue.
