I've been around this forum and good old S40Concepts for many years. Decided to share my project with you guys.

It's 1998 S40 T4.

This car has mileage about 400 000+ km's.
I don't know exact mileage, because in Estonia car sellers used to fake these numbers. I bought it with 170k km's.
I've driven about 160k km's with it as it was a daily driven car. Last 5 years it has been in my friends' garages where I've worked on it.
So, it's pretty good shape considering the age and rough winters it has lived through.

Dynoed 430 hp / 550 nm this summer.
It has been good to me. Never broken down, I've driven over 8000 km's this year. I have to thank my tuner for this. I guess hardware has been good, too.

Managed to win at Estonian 1 mile race in A class (upto 2 litre turbo and 3,5 litres NA cars): 275 km/h / 171 mph.
My rev limiter is at 280 km/h (7000rpm).
7500 rpm should take me to 300 km/h :) Unfortunately, for that I have to travel to Germany.

So, here goes the mods list:

- B4194T engine
- B4194T2 cylinder head with stock camshafts
- Megasquirt 3 ECU
- Holset HX35 #12 divided @2,2 bar
- Autoverdi forged conrods
- Autotech modified pistons
- Stiffer valve springs
- Aluminum valve retainers
- Tial MVS 38mm external v-band wastegate (15psi spring)
- KKD Motorsports custom divided exhaust manifold
- Custom 3" exhaust with 1 middle resonator and rear muffler - pretty quiet :)
- Stock T4 wastespark coils, BCR8ES spark plugs
- China 600x300x63 intercooler and custom piping - no-boost/high-boost difference is just few degrees

- Bosch 1000cc injectors @3bar fuel pressure
- Adjustable Mallory FPR
- Walbro 255lph intank pump + 2x Walbro external pumps
- 2L Fuel surge tank
- 8mm fuel return line

- BC Racing coilovers
- SuperPro poly bushings
- Ultra Racing 19mm anti-roll bar
- Custom front strut bar
- Polyurethan lower engine mounts

- M56 gearbox
- Quaife LSD
- Sachs 707 pressure plate
- 850R clutch disc
- 850 flywheel

- Battery relocated to the trunk
- 20mm turbo oil return line
- AEM large air filter
- Mercedes van custom water radiator
- Subaru WRX front seats
- Alcantara covered dashboard

EGTs under 800C @25C outside temps at fullboost run.
Intake temp about 30C @25C outside temp at fullboost. Temp is decreasing when going faster at fullboost. Pretty good cooler.

I am sure I've forgotten many details. It's been a long time...

First dyno after the build, mapping to 2 bar

275 kmh run on 1 mile:

Little burnout at the start of the same run:

I will post more photos another day.

Btw, managed to outrun these nice cars this year:

Very nice!

What spark gap are you running with the stock coils?

Stock headgasket?

Gasoline or ethanol?

Where are you from?

Thanks guys.

I am from Estonia. Right next to Finland and Sweden.

Hello, Marko (VulvaS40T4) :)
Marko has helped me with good advice and has supplied me with quality injectors and valve springs.
His build has been good sample for me.

Spark gap is untouched. I've used plugs as they come from the box. But, I've considered changing the gap just to test how much would it change. Always forgot to try it at dyno. In dyno the main problem has been the poor quality of fuel. Haven't installed water injection, but I've been considering it.

Yes, headgasket is stock. At low boost (under 2,5 bar) it should not be a problem :) I think the stock can take up to 3 bar of boost.

Yes, gasoline 98RON, because it's not possible to get E85 from gas stations. Only couple of specialty shops sell it: it's pricey and there's no 24/7 availability. Perhaps one day...

No traction before 100 km/h when I really floor it. But if it's good road and be careful with the pedal, I think 0-62 in 5 sec should be possible. On 3rd gear there is enough traction with these tires that I have. But, when the temps drop below 10C/50F it will spin tires in 3rd, too.

Thanks.

Sure, you can add more parts to the list - forged pistons, better spooling turbo, race cams, custom manifold, misc parts + new tune - it would cost like 5k $ to take the power to 600+ hp.

But, I think I will leave it as it is. Even now the fun begins from 100++ km/h. Then it would start from 100+ mph. If I'd live in Germany, I would tune it to max :)

On street this might be the best setup for power and spool. :) After this there is just more lag and wheelspin to higher speeds.

I think 500hp is ultimate setup for street and for daily driver FWD car. You can give lots off expensive sportcars run for their money with that power. ;)

Yeah, this tire and wheel combo makes it interesting. At some angle it feels like tractor-like :) These tires have good traction.
I ran separate set of rims/tires for 1 mile race. You can see that from video.

16" rims and 205/50 tires. I was considering 18" rims, but as our roads are not very good...

I have adjusted the height so it won't rub at all. BC Racing coilovers are nice, too. Not too bumpy. I don't know much about suspension and best settings, but it feels neutral at the moment. Not much understeer. I haven't been to a track yet. Perhaps next summer.

But, VulvaS40T4,don't you agree that for street there are better turbos? Like MasterPower and BorgWarner turbos. Then again, 2+ bar boost is also fun :)

There are faster spooling similar sized turbos which will produce more power than holset turbos but who wants to pay 3 x holset price for 500rpm faster spool and 50hp more power. :D

My friend swapped his crappy hx40 holset which he bought 500euros to BW EFR 9180 turbo which he bought 2000euros. Hi gained on same engine 200rpm slower spool and 100hp more power with same 67mm compressor wheel. :)

Most peoples problem is that they buy to small turbo for their power needs or too large turbo that will overshoot power target and then they complain lag. :D So buy right sized turbo and enjoy. ;)

Also you have to buy turbo for your needs, if you like track driving, drag driving, drifting, standing mile, top speed runs you need different turbo for all these things. If you try to track drive with standing mile turbo it wont be good and it will always be compromise and thats why people arque which turbo is best.

At the end of the day how much lag you can tolerate is the main thing. :)

This is very true. Sometimes it is difficult to know what size turbo you need, if you can't find someone with a similar setup to compare with. Manufacturer ratings are generally not so reliable, or over optimistic.

I was very happy with the 6262bb turbo, but I got used to keeping the rpms in the 4-9k rpm range for fun. I'm now content to drive with the twinky little turbo on my C30 for calmer driving on a daily basis. ;)
